I've just agreed an appointment with a customer for tomorrow in Southampton. I'm worried, having read this thread, that my journey from Newcastle isn't going to be as straightforward as first thought. Should I take some spare drivers, or even a spare car, just in case?? Perhaps I should buy a house down there in case the hotel messes my booking up... Yours, worried, from somewhere further North of Yorkshire.
Well, I made it. A tough slog resulting in me stopping for coffee at Woodall Services. I didn’t take a spare car in the end, although that does mean I need to find some way to put more petrol into the car in the morning. Any ideas? sanguinary said:
Never thought of that. I’ll put it to her shortly. I’ll then see if my Dad can head down from Manchester, with some fuel, to get the other half back home again. Thanks, you’re a life saver!
A bit like how the kept the Vulcans in the air all the way to the Falkands and back. All you need is a couple of Victors to refuel mid flight.....BrabusMog said:

Dick Turpin managed it overnight on a horse !!
(Actually he probably didn't)
And if you were to believe breweries and landlords stopped at every pub on route and within a twenty (English) mile radius.(Actually he probably didn't)

But it had levy windows yes ?
Oh Christ it wasn’t from the time when a driver side mirror was an extra was it! Or was it passenger side ?
To be honest I think the clutch was an extra. Oh Christ it wasn’t from the time when a driver side mirror was an extra was it! Or was it passenger side ?
No leccy windows, they had a handle that you physically had to wind, can you believe! No power steering either. It did have a device in the centre, just below the air vents that could pick up radio waves, but keep that one hush hush.
Now I understand why the mongol Rally is not for everyone. https://www.theadventurists.com/adventures/mongol-...
Last year I drove from London to Southern Bulgaria in a 1992 Hilux Surf. Happens to also be a 3.0D. No problems at all.
Tell her to man up.
The lady in question sounds like my brother's ex wife. "I'm not doing that, you should transport me there in the level of comfort I am used to. How dare you expect me to drive myself".
Sorry to say it but it sounds like divorce is the best plan OP. Either that or post the question on mumsnet.

OP is making a point of ignoring this thread, as he's posting elsewhere:

Amusingly Rewe was kind enough to ask whether his missus and daughter managed to beat the odds and get to Yorkshire ok, but got no answer.
Has anyone been in touch with Yorkshire Police yet to make sure they got there safe and sound in a suitably middle class vehicle?
EDIT: Whoops, beaten to it by AlexRS2782

OP here.
Really should let this die but in the (vain) hope of closure....
Delighted (and surprised) to have created 18 pages of amusement.
No, its not that far, and for all of those with long distance trucker style wives, I'm sure this is the equivalent of just nipping round the corner for a new set of dungarees.
As the only person on the thread that actually knows the two women involved, you have to believe me that allowing them to share the (yes, yes, modest amount of) driving would be better option, and I remain surprised that no insurance company seems willing to provide cover.
I drop back in another 15 pages or so.

Hmmmm, you are not the only one who has a wife who is less than enthusiastic about driving.
I know one who hasn't driven since a minor off in Morris Marina some time in the 20th century.
Another who won't drive outside the city limits..........and its a pretty small city where they live.
I have a different problem..........the handbrake wants to share driving on long journeys but doesn't appear to see my helpful driving hints and tips are as helpful as I do!!

Dave, you failed to address the glaringly obvious question that everyone has asked...Really should let this die but in the (vain) hope of closure....

WHY CANT YOUR WIFE AND DAUGHTER JUST GO IN THE MINI? It's not a cross continent epic they're embarking on...
Thanks.

Perhaps the insurance companies fortuitously know the folly in insuring someone who can't join and exit a single 4 lane motorway without help? Sounds like they are dodging a bullet to be honest. I mean ffs the M1 literally goes from London to Yorkshire.Really should let this die but in the (vain) hope of closure....

I'll never be able to understand people who are afraid of motorways or unfamiliar journeys, particularly in the modern day with Google Maps doing all the thinking for you (not to mention the crappier nav I'm sure the Porker has).

This has to be my favourite thread ever ! Can't believe people like the op's family actually exist in the real world. My wife thinks nothing of jumping in the car and driving from Cornwall to Surrey or Lincolnshire on her own.
Talk about living a sheltered life, for fks sake just get in the car and go, you'll find it won't be so bad.
