If you love playing with knobs that much go buy a capri (they are perfect for dogging)
Agree. I fail to understand the male pre-occupation with playing with a knob in order to drive. Something related to insecurity perhaps or a fear of not being masterly & in control? If you love playing with knobs that much go buy a capri (they are perfect for dogging)
Grown-ups in their F1 racing cars have auto boxes do they not? Or don't they know as much about driving as some Phers?
There is no way an auto box underperforms what the human hand can do.
In any case the manual gearbox is as old as the car itself so how uncool is that?

It gets rather confused sometimes at roundabouts, the three second delay is not good when you want the car to go.
My last three toys were auto so I have tried them.
Not for me.
This does rationalise why I persist with older cars.
If someone wants to fully appreciate the thrills and the dangers that make road going sports cars appealing, there is no reason to sought after an 18/19 plate automatic Diesel 2 door saloon/hatch with aggressive ESP, you look at the past offerings.
The major car makers collectively caters to the mainstream MPG/TCO/Image conscious financee, 'sports cars' from what we grew up familiar with are no longer aspirational, however 'sporty' looking cars with a premium badge that does the shopping/skool runs @ 52 MPG however very much is.

An F1 driver races to win, milliseconds are precious. I'm not sure the last time I needed to beat anybody by a few milliseconds on my local B road. An F1 driver also has 700bhp+, bugger all weight, huge downforce, acceleration, braking and cornering G-forces to contend with as well as 20 other buggers trying to beat him. I just want to enjoy driving to the fullest on my local B road, do I really care which one is faster or what they use in F1 or do I want to get the most enjoyment? If fiddling with a stick gives me that enjoyment, who are you to tell me otherwise?Grown-ups in their F1 racing cars have auto boxes do they not? Why?
If manual boxes were faster, F1 cars would have them...
Says nothing about the driving experience, though.

There is a healthy demographic of buyers who still seek manuals transmissions from performance/sports cars as it adds to the driving experience.
My daily is an Evora S IPS - a flappy paddle auto. Its great in auto mode around town and great in manual mode when having fun.
Do I miss a manual? My previous Evora was a manual and every interesting car I had before that was a manual - but I don't miss it and I don't feel as if I am missing out at all.
If I do feel like some old school heel and toe, I take my daughter's 1.4 fiesta for a spin.
Actually, I am inclined to think that driving a low power car makes you a better driver, you learn to conserve momentum and plan every corner as you haven't got power to make you fast.

So you haven't driven an Audi DSG then?

Same. Evo X SST (awful dual clutch), Giulietta QV TCT (decent dual clutch) and Giulia QF (excellent ZF 8 speed)....and I'm now sick of autos. I actually enjoy driving my son's MiTo TwinAir and wife's XC60 because they're manual. The autos will be faster than the equivalent manual in any performance situation but, my god, they're fecking boring. The term 'F1' should be automatically deleted in any post concerning road cars...
Never seen such an ill-fitting comparative.
