For work purposes and the commute I love my DSG, however it is flawed in certain situations.

In terms of a track car for example, manual all the way unless I can afford a GT3 RS

And I really didn't like the 10-speed Ford auto in a Mustang we recently hired in the US. Coupled with the 2.3T engine it made for a poor experience overall. The manual (6-speed) would've been better in this car.
I missed this earlier...but yes. It was far better in S with the mode set to Sports+ but part of that is the different mapping for the throttle (I found it best in track mode but then it disabled the ESC).

I'm *really* not a convert, I disliked the inconsistent braking, the inconsistent timed changes when using the paddles, the massive clunky changes that thudded through the entire car and the normal lack of being in the wrong gear was compounded by the shear number of gears it had.

Overall while I did like the Mustang the gearbox ruined it and the 2.3T was if anything too well tamed, it should be 50hp more than it's predecessor we have in the 6 MPS but it never felt it.

It made me really appreciate how good the engine/gearbox in the Mondeo 2.5T actually is...although I'd really like to try the Mustang GT (ie the v8) with the 6MT. An automatic is *still* off the cards until there is zero choice in the matter.

All you who love autos in traffic, I suppose it’s so you can leave your foot on the brake when stopped. Just lazy and bad practice.

So what are you supposed to do put it in park or neutral and use the handbrake? fk that a hundred times a day, its actually good practise to leave it in D and use the footbrake as that's what 99% of the manufacturers recommend you do, why anyone would choose a manual car to drive on today's heavily trafficked roads is beyond me.

Surely you aren’t being serious?

Depends on the car, the wife has a Focus ST and that has to stay a manual, whereas my Mondeo and the powershift is relaxing long distance cruiser. Each has its pros and cons.

Auto hold is great for this and you can be lazy because you have an auto in the first place...and it will also hold it in drive while you rest both feet! Win win. smile

I do prefer a manual ultimately though, but for those that aren't interested in driving then it is hard to fault an auto in fairness.

Ever since I had a DSG on my MKV Golf R32 I knew I could live with an auto. Next couple of cars didn’t (996 Turbo and a V8 Vantage), then plumbed for my first soft top which does. And as it has great paddles (size and position), I can pretend I’m in control when the mood takes me.

There is no pretence.

Staggered you broke a WJ gearbox. These are absolutely bulletproof normally. The FB page has these with 300k on still going strong
Electrical issues I guess, with a misdiagnosis of gearbox buggered.

I'm not - in over 40 years I've only had 3 autos, but they were all pre-1990s cars that I couldn't get with a manual gearbox so I had no choice. rolleyes

I know autos have moved on since then, but I really just don't want one.

I don’t have to, it’s got auto-hold.

You can be very interested in driving and find it hard to fault an auto. See also ABS, starter motors, synchromesh gearboxes, engines....

Use a washing machine rather than going down to the river? Bad practice.

yes

I said it a little bit tongue in cheek because I personally don't find autos very interesting to use/drive. I'd love a R35 GTR though and they're auto only, but if they were available with a manual I think I would have had one by now.

Would both of you explain the connection with driving? I suspect you don’t understand my point. No wonder you prefer the simplicity of an auto.

You may as well criticise manual drivers for repeatedly taking one hand off the steering wheel when they approach hazards.

Hehe. Priceless...

Perhaps you can explain why you think it’s bad practice to leave it in drive with your foot on the brake? Particularly when that’s exactly what auto-hold does, and how you’re expected to use it. Are you one of these people who claim to be “dazzled” by brake lights? biggrin If so, perhaps you should get your eyes checked, as it may be a sign there’s something wrong with you.

Not quite the same but removing the hand maybe once is plenty.

When I had my eyes checked recently they were just fine.
