This is a great thread, and I'll appeal again for gatekeepers to stay away.

I've enjoyed seeing and reading about all of the estates, from the 230bhp mildly spiced versions, all the way to the 500bhp+ vindaloos.

Long may that range continue.

Its the S with 275hp, and British Racing Green paint which has to be worth a few extra points.

Shall I get my coat? getmecoat

I’d say a Golf R has more right than a 530i or a 335d.
It’s bought because it’s the fastest one, with no compromise on fuel economy. Both the BMW’s are ‘well let’s not go too far’ models.

It’s a real shame they didn’t use the 2.5 from the RS3 though…
Not looking for a fight, but the 335d is faster than the Golf R.

Not mine but mates E91 335i touring...

Was a really nice fairly unmodified example. Unfortunately, lost a fight with a tree.

Gutting. I'll try not to do the same with mine (also 335i)

I know the 335d is PDQ, but are you certain about that?

if we're talking like 10 year old models then it's close run. Current models i don't think it's true.

2017-19 models: Golf R estate (0-60 is 5.1 second, 296 bhp, 280 Ib/ft torque), 335d (0-60 is 4.9 seconds, 309 bhp, 465 Ib/ft torque)

2024 models: Golf R estate (0-60 is 4.9 seconds, 316 bhp, 310 Ib/ft torque). Obviously no 2024 335d to compare with.

Not a lot in it but that torque makes a difference. Like I said, not picking a fight, but I can't see how the Golf is more worthy than the 335d (and therefore the gatekeeping needs to stop).

Fairly close then. I'd imagine, for the less talented, that the Golfs 4WD would make covering ground quicker easier.

Both clearly fast estates by any sane metric. I suspect both would spank an E34 M5 or Audi RS2, both cars that I’d argue founded this genre. I saw a lovely manual E36 328i touring the other day. I’d still count that as a fast estate too quite frankly. This would be a very dull thread if the only entrants allowed were some Audi RS models, a few mercs, about 2 BMW’s and then the odd curio from jag or Alpina.

Ah, OK, I suppose I was relating to the shape I have. And yes, of course the Golf R is a fast estate. Anyone saying that it's not needs to FRO.

Golf R is definitely a fast estate. Lovely things.

Had some PPF applied to protect the primer grey.

Golf R Estate is like the baby brother to the RS4, definitely qualifies as a fast estate.
