Everyday Driver have reviewed it, too.

They seem to view it as a possible Cayman competitor now that the latter has been nerfed.

My biggest quibble is the price. £54k for a car you need to finish yourself is taking the mickey. It should be a good £5-8k cheaper on that basis. If the BMW soft top comes under £50k, the coupe should be a couple of grand cheaper. Then the 335bhp doesn’t seem so underdone. As it is, for the decent spec, £54k is only £2k less than I paid for a new Giulia Quad after discounts.

I like it but surely the low center of gravity Vs the gt86 comes from the z4 chassis strengthening meaning there is loads of weight in the floor and the roof is largely just weather protection.

I like it ,tuning firms like Litchfield will take it up a notch if u really need more performance? .Although manual shift is preferred when cars acceleration is this quick these paddle shifters help keep your hands where they need to be .

Love the way the windscreen wraps around to the sides.
Love the colour too.
BUT my wife has a Toyota already, an Aygo.

The old supra turbo looked like the batmobile when they were new in the early 90’s - we were in our late teens and we were all knocked out by them. They were where Japan was in terms of its own fascinating bun fight with the Skyline. The cars had a Japanese identity, a fascinating oddity with that big flat wraparound dash. And then under the skin if you were a spanner guy you knew they were astonishingly simple - and yet more than the sum of their parts.

The celica GT4 was equally drool inducing and a mate of ours actually had the use of one via his dad. Not jealous much!

This new one is none of those things. The moment has passed and for me it’s a poor relative not because it has undersized brakes (I’m more than certain that the old one couldn’t have stopped a pig in an entry) but because it sells out half way on being proudly Japanese.

Yeah - FR, turbo, 50/50 weight distribution, a very organic / curvaceous shape, a fairly short wheelbase, double-bubble roof, claimed low c.g.

The differences are that the RX-7 is 250kg lighter, has sequential twin turbos like the old Supra used to, the choice of a manual gearbox, and has a leaner, less bulbous front end due to the compact rotary and double-wishbone front suspension.

Of course, the final difference is that the Supra is a new Toyota with a 5-year warranty of trouble-free driving, whereas the RX-7 is practically guaranteed to require expensive maintenance within 5 years tongue out

It's not a Supra is it? It's not even a Toyota. It has no DNA link to the lineage it is marketed against. They've not even included that stty 1980s digital clock that's graced every Toyota and Lexus ever to make you feel at home.

That BMW powertrain and tech are probably very good indeed so no surprise it is sporty but road biased; that's always been the Z4s design brief.

Marketing bullst. I've always hated model sharing but with performance cars it feels all the more annoying.

I don't think it's that expensive. Cars are generally cheaper now then they have been in the past, like for like. According to the original press release, the Mk4 Supra was £37,500 when it went on sale in the UK on 24th of August 1993. According to the Bank of Englands inflation calculator, that is £75,040.43.

It is obvious to me that this is not an unreasonable price for a car in this category outright, although I'm sure there might be an argument to me made for it being too expensive compared to it's peers.

I'm not sure this Supra is really in a comparable place in the market though.

Possibly true, the Mk4 in particular was more of a GT, wasn't it?

But I think the point I'm making is still valid, people seem very stuck on how much a car should cost according to out of date numbers in their heads. This is cheaper than the Mk4 Supra was when it was released, by some considerable margin, even if they have adjusted the category it sits in a bit.

may as well buy a lexus offering, much better choice like the RC F or the lc500 if you want a nice grand tourer (that's Japanese engineered)

the LC500 hybrid is more like the Supra of today surely

there's even an LC F coming!

I love the way it looks from the outside - I think it’s fantastic, one of the best looking cars on sale in fact.

But the rest of it does absolutely nothing for me - the fact it’s a BMW Z4 with a different body ruins it for me. Same engine as an m140 which is half the price etc. Just not special enough under the skin.
Same. Have absolutely no interest in it knowing it has a bmw engine and chassis. Considering some of the great engines Toyota have made it's just so massively lame. No thanks.

I really like it and couldn’t give a fk about it being a BMW in drag, lack of heritage etc. because the car wouldn’t exist without the collaboration.
Unfortunately too expensive for me to buy new and auto only is dissapointing but I’m glad they’ve made it and seemingly done a good job. One to watch the classifieds for in future.
