Agree on both counts in terms of fuel economy and acceleration. The BMW will be markedly better in terms of drive and cabin quality though and at 0-60 in 4.0 it’s more than enough. I’ve been in a model S before it just doesn’t come close to the luxury feel of 7/S/A8 etc.
The Tesla seats and interior are way behind a car in this segment. The 7 series here gives more than enough acceleration (4 secs to 60 is really really fast) - a much better range and easier/faster way of replenishing that range and a higher sustainable top speed. Not sure if a Tesla will even do 150mph never mind sustain that over any distance - which you can do in this cars home market. Refinement - this will be exceptional - big petrol engines in cars like this always are. A deeply impressive car.

Need to bring back the old speedo and rev counter. Don’t like those dials at all
Agreed. I just can't reconcile myself to them. Now what would be clever would be to have software that can show BMW dials of old onto the display. I'll have either circa 1995, with the economy gauge doing that little sweep on startup, or perhaps just the F01/F10 dials, which are just about perfect.nicfaz said:
They are dying breed because everyone is buying a Tesla model S instead, if my local area is anything to go by. I can see why too - even though the BMW will be a nicer place to sit, it screams absurd consumption with styling to match. The model S will cost peanuts to run and have markedly better real-world performance.
Yes but apart from that massive screen in the middle, a Tesla looks about as well appointed internally as a barn. nicfaz said:

If you are in interested in buying a large luxury sedan.Fuel consumption should not really be that big of a deal.A 7 series will appeal to a different demographic.rare6499 said:
Don’t get this fascination with cheap TFT screen dials in luxury cars. They aren’t luxury at all. I get the benefits but what’s luxury about a screen you will soon share with a 1 series?
Why can’t we get some detailed dials that are made out of real materials. Guess I’m stuck in the past.
I think it’s because of the level of customisation, that seems to appeal to people at the minute. Why can’t we get some detailed dials that are made out of real materials. Guess I’m stuck in the past.
If I tell my wife there is a button that lets you adjust the suspension settings she would look at me like I was mad.
If I tell her there is a button that changes the display of the dials to a sat nav or to a digital readout she would probably say that’s a good feature. Horses for courses.

S Class probably be smoother, but this is surely a better car to drive?
Prior experience of the S class (older model to the current one) is that pretty much anything is better to drive. The seven's were always a bit keener and less barge like to drive. Chestrockwell said:
Can’t help but think that BMW are being modest with the 0-62 figures, surely this is a sub 4 second car
That's reserved for the 6.6 V12 4 secs is very fast to 60 and at this price the car is terrific value.

If ever there’s a car designed to look like it’s sneering at the proletariat, guess that a bit like the ‘dogs look like their owners’ analogy
LOL - I do tend to find a lot of dog owners have a face fit for radio. This is not as good looking as the pre facelift car but under the skin there's been some big improvements. I will be looking at these to replace my LS460 along with the new LS when the time is right.
A V8 petrol just seems a really good fit for a car like this.

I recently had a go in a new Mercedes A class which has digital dials and there is indeed an option for the speedo/rev counter display to look like those fitted to an old 190E, a silly novelty. Regarding the 7 series, it's a monster, 2T of luxury well beyond what people need but there are clearly enough people out there to justify it.
