RIP Niki Lauda. Unlikely we'll ever see a battle in F1 again like that of Lauda & Hunt in 1976!!

This should have been today's top story and posted much earlier instead a load of twits getting hot under the collar over a 'coupe' Cayenne.

RIP Niki Lauda

As a young lad, I was hooked on F1 by constantly hearing about Lauda and Hunt on the TV, a fantastic driver who raced in the eras I find most fascinating, 70's and 80's, his determination to succeed is an inspiration. I also loved hearing him say things straight to the point, saying s**t in an Austrian/Germanic accent makes it more dramatic.

How very sad. An intensely admirable man taken all too soon.

RIP, indeed. And that hitch-hikers scene was superb. Car was Alfa Giulia? Can't remember now....

It was a Lancia. That Fiat 128 looked too recent for the period to me, big bumpers, large rear lenses:

Oddly, even the BBC had it as lead story. PH outPH’d by auntie beeb. Quite sad.

Absolutely Choked at hearing of his passing. But I'm sure that he and James will have Lots of catching up to do.

1973, he shared this Inca orange Alpina / Jagermeister CSL with Hans - Pieter Joisten, who was to tragically lose his life in this CSL.

What a great photo!

It's all been said in previous threads but all I can add is - he was my first real hero.

RIP Niki

Indeed. But at least PHers have posted some images some of us have not seen before. It's not just the images either. Thanks to other PHers for sharing.

Some photos I thought worth sharing... the last one with Niki holding a pig's ear relates to a story someone posted in the F1 thread where he was at the site of his accident in '76, 'looking for his ear', which was typical of his sense of humour...

A real gentleman from the era before sporting self-obsessed celebrities. You never saw him checking his hair in a mirror after winning a grand prix & being just tolerated by his fellow drivers.

Lancia 2000 Berlina.

RIP Niki. One of the true legends of motorsport, and I don't say that lightly. There aren't nearly as many as people think there are.

Yes RIP indeed

And to think pundits still think Tiger Woods made the greatest sports comeback of all time...
