Very sad news. A real talent.

Why do we use euphemisms for death? He died, not passed.

Very sad news. Happy memories of seeing him win in a Procar M1 at Hockenheim, and meeting the great man (and getting his autograph) at Silverstone in the Jaguar days. Thanks Niki.

A great man, from when drivers were gladiators. His honesty and straight-talk in this PR obessessed era were worth paying attention to.

Some photos I thought worth sharing... the last one with Niki holding a pig's ear relates to a story someone posted in the F1 thread where he was at the site of his accident in '76, 'looking for his ear', which was typical of his sense of humour...

Great pictures.

I'm too young to remember (born 77, when they were at their peak) but were Hunt and Lauda always mates, or was it as Rush depicted, that Hunt felt massive guilt after the Nurburgring crash, and they developed a new found respect for each other?

There are photos of the pair of them chatting happily Before Laudas 76 accident. So there would have certainly been friendly banter between the pair of them. But they were both totally different characters, Hunt was a party animal, who lived for the day, whereas Lauda was reserved, far more focused on the job in hand. Rush would have certainly used some "artistic licence"
In its portrayal of the pair. And there can surely be no doubt that after his terrible accident, Hunt had a deep respect for Laudas grit and determination.

What isn't often mentioned though, is that both were quick ETC drivers, Hunt won the 73 Avon Tour of Britain in the monster A J Rivers Camaro and also drove the Malcolm Gartlan Alpina 3.0 CSL a couple of times with Brian Muir in 73.
Lauda drove the Capri 3000E @ Brands Hatch in May 72 with Bill Stone ( March manager ) and also the Jagermeister Alpina CSL in 73 and the RS Capri in 74.

Very sad news - I always watched the GPs growing up.

Possibly because my Dad was a Scot and a big Jim Clark fan!

But by 1976 I had just got my full licence and I remember seeing that crash on the TV, which was horrific.

I was amazed he survived it, but to go on and then win a title was something else!

And he seemed to add so much at Mercedes in recent years - what a star!

What a man, what a life and a sad loss for motor racing.

I loved his interviews and his frank points of view.

Hearing how he returned to racing weeks after the crash, still bandaged up and weeping blood from the bandages during the race, demonstrates a level of persistence that few can have today, let alone racing drivers. Truly a man who set an example! RIP.

Thanks for the link - that's a well-written piece.

Interesting that, at the time of writing, there are 55 comments about the death of a hero-status 3-time world champion, and 118 about the launch of a slightly facelifted Audi.

It's a strange world.
