I appreciate in the real world, the M2 matches and beats the TTRS when you look at the in-gear acceleration times.
???

Does it?
When I looked the TTRS seemed a bit faster for practically any increment than the normal M2.

Not that there’d be much difference on the road
Indeed, my mistake. I must have referred to the wrong comparison. As you say, there is little in it in the real world.

no doubt the car is quick and I'm sure it handles well - BUT here's the problem - my good lady - who, by her own admittance, has no interest in cars - likes the TT - and the Evoque - and the Mini...........and that's the general image of this car - one for the ladies......I'm sure I'll get plenty of people pointing out that a true petrol head shouldn't care about image - but we all know that's not true - your car, like your clothes is an extension of your personality.

You can add a superb engine but it's still a TT, automotive jewellery, and for that reason it's a no from me.....

So if the TT actually handled, was actually rewarding to drive not just very fast an effective... say it sat where the Caysters sit now... you wouldn’t entertain it because the laydeezzz like it?
I had a TT, got the it’s a girls car, hairdressers car etc.. have a Cayman now and have had the so you couldn’t afford a 911 line. Didn’t bother me, couldn’t give rats arse what anyone else thought. I spend my money on what I want and fk what anyone else thinks. I’m not one to judge people by what they have or the way they look. Maybe there’s not many people like that...?

If your car and your clothes are an extension of your personality, you probably don't have a personality.

I take your point - And incidentally think the Cayman is a great car - the TT is just style over substance - unfortunately nearly everyone judges people by what they drive to some extent - why join Pistonheads otherwise? Because it’s interesting chat from people with interesting cars - if you had a choice between chatting to a bunch of guys from a Car Club or an Accounting group what would you do. - Bingo - you just made a judgement - that’s life.

I think the idea that small sports cars and coupes are girly is pretty much dead now - because the stereotype is now something like a white Evoque.

Well that's your manual and gear-changing! Pretty sure the post-LCI DCT version does mid 9's - might try when my engine completes it's run-in period (yes, got a new engine from BMW). But both will be handicapped versus an AWD car like the RS when fighting the tarmac.

Surprised the M2 needs 10.3 seconds to get to 100, when the M140i book figure is 9.9.
I don’t think they’ve figured the 140 in same sort of test for comparison but they did do the M135 with the 8-sp auto half a decade or so ago

..

A bit lighter than the M2 but 50bhp less - was damp when tested though so good times

They also tested the M4 in bone dry conditions - not much heavier than the M2 so maybe an idea of what an M2 Comp would run the numbers at perhaps
It's can be more useful to quote 0-200kph numbers, as these cars get quicker and quicker.

The M140i auto takes 16.1 sec, an M4 DCT 12.9, M2 Comp DCT 15.2, E92 M3 DCT 15.3, TT-RS 8S 12.3 according to the German mags.

Obviously all dependant on the conditions on the day, how many 'wursts consumed etc. Have fun!

TTRS is ferocious and don't forget Audi hold them back from the factory, simple remap if you don't care about the warranty generates close to 500hp and same ft2 torque!

Awesome 0-60 in under 4 secs.

Lovely party trick to have.
Nail on the head there, as AV185 says, how often would you use it in normal usage?

I only tried it once in 12 months of ownership, just for a giggle.

Having been a passenger in an M2 it felt just as quick as the TT once on the move.

And a manual gearbox.

I'd never buy DSG again.
LC is easy to set up though and can be used over and over eg it doesn't reset every time it is used. You could launch it everywhere if that was your wish wink

10.5 seconds is what Autocar fully road tested it at(manual)...I'd probably be nowhere near that figure doing it myself!

The DCT will be a fair bit quicker I'm sure and I think that is one of the big reasons why the DCT easily outsold the manual.

Not amongst people I overhear its not. Any small open top car to a good few is still seen as girly.

I think the Cayman is a wonderful car too.
Re people judging others by what they drive. Here’s the thing. Most people I know, most being not car people, were surprised when I chopped in the TTS for the 981... the Audi is a lovely car, it looks great... it’s an Audi they said. Yes style over substance but they had no idea about the substance. If TT drove like a Cayman they’d have had no idea. Style was everything.
Me, it suited me at the time. Fast, relatively cheap to run for the performance at hand but not much excitement. I knew what I was getting.
To others though, it’s enough. Nothing wrong if that’s what you want. Nothing wrong if it isn’t what you want.

So I'm looking for a new daily driver, but something a bit quicker but able to kinda do it all. My commute is 30 miles of small a-roads each way, so they can be horrible in the winter, from icey, to muddy etc, but great fun in the summer. I've gone from, TTRS, M2 Comp, 718S, 911, Aston N430, and now I am back around to a TT RS. I used a MK2 TT Quattro TDI for a year for commutiing the and the thing had some much grip it was unreal, and I've owned all sorts of st on all sorts of tyres, you'd really chuck that car in at some mental speeds. The MK3 interior looks great, MPG doesn't seem bad, engine is a master piece compared to 718, M2 Comp, and 500hp after a few small tweaks. Easily fit a haldex controller to if you want. I think a daily sports car is always a compromise but for me a the moment the TTRS is proving to the be right weapon.

I might even go full hairdress and get a soft top just to hear that noise with the roof off as I live in the sticks and commute through the countryside. I mean I've had a Boxster too so already got the T-Shirt.

I've driven an M2 (Competition). I wasn't that blown away by it. People harp on about the straight six, but for me, those days of a glorious BMW six pot are long gone. The synthesised engine note from the likes of the M2,M3,M4 etc is horrible.

I've driven a Porsche 718S. Was actually really impressed. The 4 pot didn't bother me as much as I thought it would, it was well fast enough for the public road and a lot of fun.

I've driven a TTRS on numerous occasions. Cabin is lovely - feels special and the build quality is ace. As for drive being boring - I don't agree. It's a fun car. It doesn't have the 'thrill' of a RWD performance car. , but... public roads, RWD, especially this time of year? Are most of us able to exploit the benefits safely? I've just come back from the Lakes and the roads were greasy as hell. Pointless my current car having 470 bhp and RWD. A TTRS would have made much more sense.

Hairdresser stigma. Sod that - who cares what other people think. I pick cars to suit my needs, not impress others. I bought a Boxster S (3.2) back in the day because it was a Porsche. Mistake.

Each to their own I guess, but for £45k, I think the TTRS is a bargain!

I think that this is where we are all different. I'd take the S55 engine from the M2/3/4 all day...everyday over the S54 engine from the E46 M3/S65 from the E9x M3. The S55 engine does sound crap though I agree.

Yeh - I get that. I just wish BMW (and other manufacturers) stopped adding fake sounds. I love turbo charged engines - just don't love fake noises.

BMW have been slaughtered for fake sound and rightly so in my opinion and now it’s common place in a lot more cars. I’ve not experienced it myself but have had turbo engines I much prefer the sound of a NA one.
