Had our w124 300D Turbo for 8 years now and my wife has racked up 170,000km in it taking the kids to and from school, events, etc. Took the opportunity when we first got it to upgrade everything wanted, using used E500 parts which were cheap, before collectors realised what great cars these were, including brakes, suspension, bodywork, interior, etc.

No rust at all, unlike cars subjected to the horrors of weather and road conditions in other countries & it's proven to be totally reliable despite this example rolling off the production line in 1991. The OM603 3.0L Turbo Diesel engine is capable of up to 4,000,000km (if well maintained, one particular Taxis has proven) and there are still so many in use worldwide, that parts supply is still not problematic. Our intention is to continue using it daily for another 20+ years and thus avoid the costs of having to replace our car as we did every 3 years, in the past, which always led to financial loss.
It also meant we could invest in a top-quality sound system, which has enhanced the enjoyment of this car and our kids have known no other family car, developing their tastes in music, using Apple Carplay to listen to whatever they want at the press of a button. Despite the costs we've incurred in developing our's, it's a car that I expect will continue to appreciate and as it gets older, will become more classic & desirable with each passing year.

Despite being world leaders in Hybrid car production, Japan doesn't tax diesel vehicles any more than petrol (most logistic deliveries are by diesel trucks and this fuel is subsidised & therefore cheaper too), although older Diesel cars cannot be registered in large cities. Fortunately, we live an hour or so out of Tokyo's metropolis.

Would similarly recommend a good-quality 6 cylinder rust-free w124 to any car enthusiast especially interested in not having to renew their car every few years due to mileage and not wanting to suffer the depreciation that comes as a hit with each vehicle change...
