nice car, but the price is outrageous

looks a bit like a Mustang or a Lexus
I was going to say it looks like a Mustang and an RCF had a love child! For the price you’d expect something a lot less generic.

I hate to say this, and as an ex M5 owner, but I would buy a Lexus LC 500 and pocket the cash. The Lexus interior is so well put together and the car looks very futuristic. The BMW to me is just a larger M4, nasty wheels and too big for UK parking and roads. Great if in the USA but not in St Albans!!

They'll depreciate like crazy, pick one up in a few years!

I'm biased as I have a 6 series coupe (although only a lowly oil burner getmecoat) but I'm struggling to see much of an improvement between the 6 series interior and 8 series interior. At least the 6 was a clear step apart from the 3 and the 5.

Also (ignoring the M) one can pick up a low mileage 3 year old 6 series for less than £30k which seems remarkable value Vs the 8 (accepting used Vs new is an age old debate).

No it doesn’t... any car registered pretty much anywhere in Yorkshire will have a Y prefix, BMW or not, private car or not.
I'm very much with Chestrockwell here. Whenever I see a new BMW on a Y plate I also think BMW UK car, mostly as I don't live anywhere near Yorkshire & the entire BMW UK fleet is on Y plates. Whenever I see an older BMW on Yorkshire plates I think ex-BMW UK car.
I get that anyone from Yorkshire buying a new BMW will also get a Yorkshire plate, but I don't think they'll hang around my local BMW dealership/trade in their 6 month old cars there as much as they do.
My old man's M6 was a "Y" plate IIRC..... So not all are BMW cars.

North of £120k for a BMW. Let's face it, a 7 year old FF is going to be a better car for the money.
Are you actually suggesting that? Firstly, these won't be 120k+. Secondly, they'll be expensive to service, but they'll be under warranty. When something goes wrong on an FF you may need to remortgage. Totally different proposition.

I think it looks fantastic... but £25k more than an M5 comp fantastic? I don't know. Way out of my price range anyway.

In a few years time at half the price these will be an interesting proposition.

Looking at the interiors together like that I actually prefer the 6 series(although the 8 series isn't really an 8 series at all and its a more expensive 6 series that's just called an 8 series).

These sit in a really weird place to me.

It won’t appeal to the Uber rich who just shrug at 120k because quite frankly the badge will be seen as a bit to common.

The chap who might want top end BMW to go a rung higher than the M5 will probably say it’s a stretch to far.

If this aiming at the S class coupe. Why bother it’s not like that is a major sales success outside of Germany?

I’m sure it is a fantastic bit of kit just seems to be a step to far.

Aside from the stupid exhausts it looks ‘ok’, a bit like a bigger 4 series. For £100k+ this is really meh.

bozzy.

You’d have to have a proper set of bks on you to sink that kind of money into that; as lovely as it is! What’s it going to be worth 3 years?

Great looking car and I'm sure it will drive nicely but two problems for me:

1) For the money that interior looks incredibly average
2) The depreciation on this car will be almost unbelievable

Your money is without a doubt better spent on a 911 or even a Conti GT.
Agreed

That interior looks decidedly bland for a £123k car.
Had the opportunity to try the new 8 series in both hard and soft top versions a few weeks ago. Only the 840d models, however.

The colour spec and options of the convertible car was very, er, "Miami", and not something I could see myself wanting unless I were to mutate into an orange skinned small-person-syndrome, with a pink sweater over my shoulders.

The coupe was amazingly different, considering that the main differences between the cars were colours and specs. Amazing to think that such diverse cars were possible within the same model.

The interior in the right spec is absolutely lovely. It's really as high a quality as can be wished for, and I'll be watching the prices of these in the used market ........ I've 8 years until I'm 50, and an 8 series seems just perfect for "me at that age".

I think it looks great, love the muscularity of the design, and the comparisons to the Mustang silhouette can only be a good thing in my eyes.

I spent a lot of time looking at BMW’s to buy, 99% of the time, the cheapest ones with the best specs and lowest miles seem to have the reg beginning with Y, mileage is always between 8-10k and they’re usually no older than a year old. In the end I realised that they’re either ex press cars/ex rental/ex fleet. They always hang around for longer, I bought my BMW 4 series that reg starts with YJ, previous owner was somebody who worked for Alphabet, BMW’s finance provider.

In my village there’s a Cooper BMW, see BMW’s up and down all the time, always have the reg that starts with H, mostly HV or HN. Every 8 series I’ve seen has started with a Y. I think the demo’s are given from BMW UK to the franchises as they’re just too expensive and could lose up to 30k before they’re sold.

0-62 in 3.9 (and clocked at 3.7 in good conditions).
Performance is hardly all about 0-60 times. Power to weight is about the same. Doubt there'd be much in it on track, or in the real world point-to-point. So yeah, I'd say that's fairly similar.

Not sure who will be buying these once the new M4 comes out?. Exterior is a cacophony of lines and creases - especially the rear end and the interior is beyond bland as if it belonged to a completely different car. The new 3 series interior looks more modern and cohesive, which will probably make its way into the next 4 series. It's a big fast car with zero class and even less elegance, and decidedly confused identity. I would feel uncomfortable if I had to park this next to a 911 or an Aston - or even an S class coupe (which is about to be discontinued btw). Money does not buy taste.
