So come on then, write a list of all these plenty of available and cheaper rwd cars that are a good as an Escort to compete in rallying?
And cheaper has to include running and repairing it, not just buying it.
I guessed you glossed over this bit "And cheaper has to include running and repairing it, not just buying it."

The fact is that while better cars came along after the Escort, such as the Chevette and the Manta, these had themselves almost disappeared by the early 90's, and parts supply (especially needed body parts, plus the unique competition parts) soon dried up.
And this is again, why the Escort is still king, as there is huge demand, and Ford and others at the time made vast quantities of parts that are still floating around.
If people think 60k for an Escort is a lot, and that's nearly half of a Grp.4 Escort build, and the same for what a 400 build would be. Even not going for a FIA spec 400, there is still the issue with rally spec parts supply for stuff that is much rarer than Escort stuff.
Same goes for other Escort era cars like the Fiat 131.

What is popular for non historic stuff nowadays ?

Not that much RWD stuff to choose from, I guess its Imprezas, Evos and the like ?

Is the BMW 1 series used at all ?

Yep, no rwd stuff, other than some guys I know have pulled the front driveshafts/diffs etc from old Scoobies, and run them in just rwd configuration.

BMW 1 Series and anything like that not really an option, simply no rally spec stuff available to use. An E82 125i stripped out and gutted of the electronics would be interesting option if the right bits were available and cheaply which they aren't. More viable as a tarmac event only car, loose surface rallying might be too extreme without a LOT of work and money.

This is why the old Escort is still the king of the hill.

Calm down. This was around the 10th mk2 Escort RS I owned. Doubt it ever saw a stage, but the 2nd one I owned most definitely had. I sold the cage and harnesses out of that one, and moved it on to Mike Young one dark winter night. According to his advert it was one of the best he'd ever had laugh

Excellent cool

Would've liked an X-pack just like in the Bjorn Waldegaard ads but always missed out on getting one that wasn't tatty

Still pretty much the best headlights I've had on a car

It was over 25 years ago though..... I reckon it would feel very slow now.

Compared to your 944 T then yes, but.........

.......funnily enough, an old friend who had one ( like about 6 or 7 of us ) back in the mid 80s bought a standard-ish Mk2 RS last winter - about 15k - needed a bit of tidying but a useable weekend car. He figured he wouldn't lose any cash on it and as he has a garage thought it'd be a fun thing for weekends. It's running well now, he let me have a little go in it just recently. I wasn't expecting much, it's a bit up on standard 110bhp but it actually felt pretty quick - quite raw and raucous which no doubt adds to the sensation but old Suzuki Swift Sport fast. It's quick-racked and turns in so well. I think a 200bhp one would be very entertaining for my drive to work. I'd avoid the dual-carriageway though!

What does one weight, 800kg? Not awful power to weight really. Compared to a modern car which could weight twice that.

Compared to my Mrs Fiesta ST too I reckon. Her indoors hated the Escort, because the carbs were noisy, and nearly every roundabout was navigated 2 or 3 times, often sideways biggrin.

My mates got a Mk2 3 door estate, ST170 engine on throttle bodies in it cloud9

It’s been 5 years building so far but it’s getting closer and closer to being finished

The Mk2 Estate and the Mk2 Van were strange beasts, as they were essentially Mk1 from the scuttle back.

I am getting less bothered about that, a Tesla accelerates faster than anything else pretty much and is amazing but I dont want one, I am, like most of us, like the Escort, a product of the era and we tend to think we want massive performance and end up on the outside looking back in with 500 odd bhp, 150 to 250 bhp, light weight, nice gearchange, direct steering and a fair old racket.

Ps, know you have a 944 so doesn't necessarily apply.

Very nice. I had a mint set of 7.5" RS alloys for mine, but never got around to swapping the tyres over.
