I've had a company car 2 years now, before that i had my Civic Type R (bought as a 1 year old) and i used it as a beloved daily driver for 10 years.

Its still SORN and sat in the garage... it does get driven up and down the private driveway every month or so, warmed up and run for 20 mins or so but still...

So how do we all cope with the seeming non-stop stream of Insurance, road tax, MOTs & servicing?
Currently all 4 cars on admiral multicar and they are mirroring ncb so it's affordable.
tax,i;ve gone monthly to stop the big hits. I know it costs a bit extra but affordable.
mot's - goes in the phone diary with alerts one month prior
servicing - try to do most myself and given the low value of the cars I don't go mad with it trying to keep them tip top. i enjoy working on them when there's stuff to be done and generally trying to refresh them - building a nice set of tools and equipment slowly but surely.

This thread has made me feel much better about my paltry 3 and henceforth justification to the wife for more.

I’m definitely looking at a 4th, think there is a gap for family duties beyond the 3 series estate, thinking RRS, 760il, S8 or RS6 (maybe 3 estates is too much though).
got my first suv (soft roader rx400h) a couple of years ago. I now understand why so many have these cars. so comfy, soft, relaxed, well kitted and great for tip runs and road trips with friends.

Would love to be in a position to own more than 1 car. Would love something for a nice summers day drive, the obvious choice of a Mk1 MX5 is ideal.

Anyway, owned 2 cars at once twice for only because I bought the replacement before selling the old one. I did like the feeling of getting outside and making the tough choice of 'which car shall I take today?'.

Hmm,

Asking "Car hoarding - problem or passion ?" in here is a bit like finding a squat full of junkies and asking "Heroin, its alright isn't it "?

Things have got a bit out of hand with me over the past wee while, I've always bought and sold cars fairly regularly but recently I've bought but not sold anything... if I'm honest, it's a bit of a chore having them all and I struggle to find time to look at/wash them nevermind actually driving them and enjoying them.

2WD Sapphire Cosworth
E91 320d Touring
E92 M3 Competition Pack
MK4 Golf Anniversary TDI (Actually Sold)
Impreza STI Version 6 Limited
Supercharged EP3 Civic Type R
Volvo 940 Turbo Estate

...some overlap in duties/reasons for buying there, but I'm away to start thinning the herd a wee bit. Hats off to anyone who has the holy trinity of means, space and time to get proper use out of a car collection. thumbup

I have 9 Alfa Romeos. All taxed and MOTd.

And a couple of parts cars that don’t count.

Oh yes and two Land Rovers, as well as some tractors.

Mrs rxe is of the opinion that if I took up golf or something sensible it would be far worse.

Christ I thought I was silly having three (Evora, Clio V6 and a shed Focus) until I read this thread.

I've no idea how anyone could afford the upkeep on any more than three (regular servicing, maintenance etc)

Car hoarding provides a valuable public service. You can only use one car at a time, so the emissions are reduced pro-rata.

I have a simple rule. If a car's not being used, sell it. There's no SORN and there's no battery tenders in my household!

It's only an issue when your garden is full of random rotting hulks that haven't moved in 10 years. If they mostly work and drive though, what's the problem? It's not hoarding, it's collecting, and being a collector has so much more gravitas

Whoever said N+1 is right though, I have two cars, and for some reason desperately want a third.
This...

I have 4 cars, combined value about tuppence.

2004 Peugeot 206, just about to fit new indicator unit and hopefully NCT (MOT) it and sell, to fund the repairs on number 4
2006 Skoda fabia, had since new, now at 280,000 kms, still going strong, the daily run around.
2006 Hyundai Santa Fe, the family bus.
2003 BMW E46 325i, my toy, needs a radiator and other parts to get going again, but this is the one that is in the garage and is not going anywhere (no rust, being an Irish car!)

Keep on collecting, I would have another one if funds allowed, probably another BMW, but over 30 years old to qualify for cheap road tax.

Most I've had at once is five, at the time it was a daily hack Fiesta, a Mk2 Mini Cooper, two Rover P6s and a Rover P5B Coupe. Had to keep the P5B at work for a few months due to lack of space. A mate at work has eleven, a couple of moderns plus nine classics, four or five of which are Eastern European, all scattered around parts of Northamptonshire in lock ups and garages.

I'm now down to two but actively looking for another classic to fill a gaping hole in my double garage... I find I'm constantly looking at ebay, Autotrader and carandclassic.com... hehe

It becomes a problem when between MOTs you did 300 miles, and whilst it's on a classic policy that doesn't include comuting, you used it once to drive to your mid week digs 1/2 mile from where you work, when your daily brake driver was broke.
The OTHER 95 miles must be domestic pleasure and taking it for the MOT.

(95 bhp Mk1 mx5 poverty spec monza)
How much is a classic policy roughly?

This gives me encouragement 😀

'Only' 5 vehicles here. I'd happily add more cheapies to the fleet and I do most of my own maintenance, but the multiple tax and insurance policies don't make economical sense.

My wife has a Mini Cooper S,
we've a home-converted campervan,
and I've a BMW E92 320d, Subaru BRZ and an Elise 111S. Obviously I've too much of a RWD sportscar/coupe thing going on, so I start browsing early MX-5's, Z4's, maybe a early BMW Mini needing work for kicks, maybe a SportKa or Puma for cheap thrills. Next thing I get mission creep and I'm looking at 987 Gen2 Caymans and Lotus Evora's. 🙄

BMW Z1 - has now reached family heirloom status. Gets very occasional use because of being a 2 seater and pretty quirky.

Need some more details!!!
I need to get a readers car thread up, but it’s not likely to come out of hibernation until mid-August due to family and work commitments. Hoping for a late summer this year.

It’s been to a few Goodwood Breakfast Clubs and Le Mans Classic. Always gets positive attention which is nice.

I've got a few at my disposal too and don't see it as an issue.

Mk3 Focus ST - My daily driver, quick, practical and comfortable.
Saab 9-3 V6 Aero Sportwagon - I play drums so used for general band ferrying duties. I put the dog in it. Sometimes I even go to the tip.
Abarth Grande Punto - Bought this almost new as a present to myself when I started my 'new' job 9 years ago. Sentimental car and always puts a smile on my face. This one is staying.
Audi S3 (8p) hatch - bought from copart as a Cat D write off and about to start rebuilding & modifying it.
Audi TT Mk1 225 - Co-own this with a mate. Bought from copart as a dealer disposal car - will become a track hack

Wife also has an Abarth 595 which I occasionally 'borrow'!

I say, if you have the space to do it then just go for it. You only live once, might as well enjoy it. I do pretty much all my own maintenance as well which helps keep costs down and gives me peace of mind that its actually been done.

I don't see an issue. How many pairs of shoes does your missus have from 10 years ago that she never wears but "won't let go"?

I live in London too and I have an 18 year old Subaru in my garage that probably covers fewer miles a year than I do walking, but it's a special machine to me. It's obviously worth fk all but every month when I open the garage and see it sleeping, rest my iPad on it's bonnet scoop while I read the gas meter, eye up it's lines in the twilight and then lock it away again for another month, it's lovely.

Car hoarding becomes a problem when... actually, I can't think of when. It's a passion when it takes precedence over any other hobby.
I think you're my (twin) Brother from another Mother,

My sentiments exactly, plus I've got a 21 year old Subaru in my garage thats done a grand total of 70 miles in the past 2 years smile
