Yes I know; I must go and drive one of the 6 pot petrols, it's been a long time, about 16 years!
You're probably in for a nice surprise, they are brilliant.

I'm in my second F31 335d M Sport Touring, both being X Drive. The suspension is much improved over the first one, and the 8 speed Auto with flappy paddles is just downright superb; I was a dyed in the wool Manual person but the Auto is an absolute joy. And yes, I do indeed drive an Estate because I don't want the barge like handling of an SUV.

But why oh why no 6 cylinder diesel in the new shape Touring, that's a shocker? If I felt that I could get similar economy out of a 330i or something then I would consider it, but realistically how close to the 40mpg that I get at present am I likely to get? About 50% motorway work, 25k miles per annum.
There is - the 330d

It’s still the straight 6 but single turbo, I think it’s 260/270hp in this, the same as the 330d in the F31.

Surely the "Best thing" about 3 series tourers up to the F series cars was that they WERE small estates. If your are couple, don't have kids, and want a decent handling sporty estate, they used to be the perfect vehicle. If you wanted more space, you traded dynamics for that space and bought the 5 series touring. But now the 3 series touring is the same size as the 5 series touring, which means if you want to buy a fast, fun sporty estate you actually need to buy the 1 series touring... oh.... wait.........

My fav thing is watching people driving F series onwards 3 series completely fail to fit through the gap i've just sailed through in my E91 tourer, and have to nail the brakes to avoid knocking their mirrors off.......

Your "fav thing" is a bit bizarre as the F31 is only 18mm wider than the E91. You probably need a bit more excitement in your life ! wink

The new 3 Touring is significantly smaller than the current 5 Touring.

But it's a new engine, the G20/1 gets the B57 the F30/1 had the N57.

I've just looked, the difference is under 2cm, so you can "sail through" whilst they have to "nail the brakes"..... With a <2cm difference? I'm pretty sure that margin would be down to drivers. I was following a daihatsu something or the other earlier which was tiny (hatchback) and the driver was still going painfully slow as there were cars parked on the left side of the road, so we were pushed a little further over, and he was crawling when any traffic was coming towards us. I was getting fed up as he had LOADS of room. That's got nothing to do with the car width, just the driver being bad at width perception. I don't think you personally would drive much different if your car was 18mm wider.

Mainly because the 5er touring is even more of a massive barge of a car!

And yes, it might only be 2cm in width, but perhaps drivers are getting less good at judging distances and the extremities of their cars, or perhaps they are now so cocooned in comfort that they simply don't look where they are actually going, but i can count lots of examples where newer models fail to make it though gaps that older ones get through (and yes, perhaps the older car drivers don't care about bashing mirrors, whereas the owners of new shiny ones do, but the trend is definitely there!)

Or perhaps you're turning into Victor Meldrew?

I don't believe it!!

but at least i won't be stuck and unable to get through a gap you could literally "get a bus though"..... ;-)

I think it looks great. Touring convert here. E36 328 Touring and now an E91 330i. Very practical, good handling and unassuming 'family man' looks. cool

It's still significantly narrower than my old 7 series and never had a problem with width, only, perhaps, on seriously narrow lanes which are those with passing places only. I can't see how you think this new 3 series is an absolute barge and your E91 isn't, unless you are one who struggles with width (which it doesn't sound like you do)....but if you think yours isn't stupidly wide, yet think the new one is, that's just utterly bizarre.

Cars are getting worryingly big overall though, you're right. And b-roads narrower for lack of verge maintenance.

Anyone actually driven the new 3 series yet? I drove one last week and I was a little surprised. Journalists love them, so maybe the example I drove wasn’t representative.

I though it was very agile...that’s good..but twitchy steering response, and woolly handling, not so good. The ride was interesting too...but I drove a car with the M adaptive damper suspension.

I bloody loved the E90 and I thought the F30 was pretty good too.
