McLaren 600LT Spider | PH Video

We took the 600LT Spider to the beach. We very nearly didn't come back...

We first drove the 600LT Spider earlier this year, in the States. Matt B thought it was "utterly, utterly fabulous". Prior to that, Dan P considered the coupe version probably the best new car he drove in 2018. Since then, the rest of us have driven the quickest version yet of McLaren's pocket supercar - and we're inclined to agree. Its demerits are made to seem like trifling concerns against a superlative backdrop. Make no mistake, this is one of the best cars you can buy anywhere in the world right now.

So overt and palpable is its ability, that it raises the obvious question: is the 600LT Spider the best car that McLaren currently makes? And if it is, how high is it in the shortlist of the best cars McLaren has ever made? Don't expect a conclusive answer in the next 9 minutes - these are the sort of hypotheticals that last a life cycle, and beyond - but let both questions percolate as you join Dan on England's south coast. Because, if nothing else, days at the seaside don't get any better than this.

I simply do not understand why one insists in the garrulous, recalcitrant use of language.

Many people have posted for this to be addressed. It’s starting to be perceived as arrogance that one repudiates the situation.

That road is a beautiful, peaceful part of the world, and the people who live on it are f*****g sick of pin-dicks using it as a racetrack.

And yes, I *am* trying to spoil their fun, because spoiling other people’s fun is exactly what some owners of these cars are doing to the pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders in that area, who now feel the road is too unsafe to enjoy. Well done PH for promoting it as a destination.

Take it to the track.

I am not sure if the use of language in this article annoys or offends me.

Dan is great for video reviews. Up there with Henry and Chris Harris IMO.

Love the LT. It would be a tough choice between one of them, and a 720S given their similar values

Serious question, and putting reckless driving and overly excessive speeding aside, but why should pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders have priority over the road?

Because that's the way we've chosen to do it in this country for several reasons.

I am sure I would love driving one but I could not buy one because they are so hideously ugly, I know looks aren’t everything but if I am spending that sort of money on a car, I want it to look stunning.

JASDUN is SO right. A lovely area spoilt but the occasionally juvenile poseur.
Such cars are merely an ego trip for the juvenile mind, a selfish indulgence & an irrelevance on todays roads. Fine maybe on a track or in a country with proper decent roads & no speed limits, but nowhere else. Does such a country exist I wonder?
No doubt salesmen get the last laugh at the expense of their customers as they trouser their commission, so good luck to them.

Q. is it any better for a fast road drive than an Aerial, a hot Caterham or an Exige? Sure it goes quickly but where outside of a track can you use the performance and how many are driven as they should be I wonder? Not a place I would park my money, sadly.

Exactly.

Roads are actually paid for to get people to move from A to B to make money for the economy, whether they are travelling to work or using a van, lorry etc.

People not using the roads for that purpose such as people spanking their cars for fun, pedestrians, horse riders and cyclists just need to be happy they are getting something to use without "paying" for it.

So all lumped in the same bracket, they are all users of a road provided to serve another purpose, ie commerse.

And at least most of the fast car drivers have some sort of insurance for third parties whilst using that road .....

And yet none of these things could be levelled at the modern supercar.

To be fair I think the admiration for the car came mostly from how it made the driver feel rather than from its outright pace so deserves the credit it received.

They are paid for in order for people to move on (it can be A to A not just A to B) for any purpose, not just in order to make money for the economy. And they are paid for a multitude of transport modes, save where legislation restricts certain users on some of the network, eg pedestrians on motorways.

All who pay tax are "paying" for it, because the money is taken from one big melting pot that all tax collected goes into. There is no separate collection fund where it is ear marked for spending on roads. (Money collected from Vehicle Tax (VED) or fuel is not ring fenced for road expenditure).

The looks have grown on me on this one, I thought it was a little too much when it was first released (in coupe form obviously). I still personally think that the 570GT is better looking overall and only really matched by the P1 for aesthetics.
