Bought a W208 CLK320 for £500 last year for a banger rally and loved it, even with its niggles. Used it as a daily for a bit and its was rather pleasant, bar the numb steering. Would love to try a 'nice' one or later W209 at some point.

Funnily enough was looking at the next shape up in these as a cabriolet. The 280 or 200 AMG...

Reliable enough?

I can assure you, the W209 did rust. Mine was the first of the W209 coupes ('02) and it developed spidery rust in the rear wings, bootlid and bonnet. Alloys all started to flake and even the plastic silver trim bits on the door handles had bubbles underneath them. I bought mine from MB at 2.5years old/30k on the clock, FMBSH, and had a right battle with MBUK in getting it rectified. Once it was, I sold it back to MB exactly a year after purchasing it. Put me off the brand for a very, very long time. Mine wasn't the exception, either. Plenty of other owners appeared on MB forums with the same or worse issues. It was a shame as the W209 was a gracefulllooking machine, great for long drives though not very exciting at all through the twisties. '04/'05 onwards models are said to be much better prospects.
Mine have all been 03 onwards (I've had 7 W209's) & I've not had rust on anywhere apart from the usual front of the rear arch where the stones from the rear tyres, that for me is insignificant when you're looking at a 16 year old car, this issue is a £200 fix every 5 years or so.

I've only had 3 Mercs.

1st was a W123 280e auto, followed by a manual W201 190e which was much better - probably as quick but much more economical!

But I felt the urge to move onwards and upwards to the next model so I bought a 1984 C280 Sport Auto, which was the most disappointing car I've ever owned - turns out I had moved onwards and backwards!

The ride quality was terrible with no handling benefit, and the build quality was very 2nd rate after my W123 and W201.

Which kind of puts me off the SOTW - it's in the era of MB build quality issues and has the recirculating-ball steering from the W202 C-Class, which is never going to excite an enthusiast. rolleyes

Still the interior looks good!

Hideous.

Driven by scum who think they're lottery winners because it's a Mercedes.
So the styling is dictated by the current ownership profile ?

What do you drive that is so upmarket ?

I bought an 07 plate 87k miles 320CDi CLK Coupe last year - it was the most unreliable car I've ever owned. And that's saying something having always had Alfa's. Notorious 7G box was the worse offender, a terrible design, but the 320 turbo-diesel engine is so complex with loads of stuff going wrong it was like opening Pandora's box. Maybe I was unluckily & got a dog but Google is full of scare stories. I gave up on it in after just 4 months when the turbo(s) went & chopped it in for my Alfa 166. Which has been a paragon of reliability after 14,000 happy miles. And far nicer to drive.

I just wish I bought a petrol V6 CLK with manual which by all accounts is the far more reliable choice.
