So is he buying or renting it?
What does it matter? It's his own hard-earned being used to pay for it, and for that, I say fair play! Life's too short, and some things are just worth making the sacrifice for. We can always make more money - making memories and experiences is a helluva lot harder. I got a massive loan to pay for one of my dream cars years ago: a Porsche 944 S2 Cabriolet for my 30th birthday. Come November, and I'll have owned that car 18 years (Though granted, it ceased performing duties as my 'daily driver' years ago - but now I enjoy the days I take it out even more). That loan was paid off 13 years ago - and don't regret a single penny of it. Indeed, why do people/we/I feel the need to constantly replace our cars with something g that often is bigger, heavier and in real-day driving, no faster?
Bravo for keeping the 944; imagine what you would have to spend to get something newer or indeed new that does the same thing?
If the 944 still does what you want it to do after all this time then there isn’t any need to change it.
In hindsight I wish I’d kept many of my cars, for different reasons
Of all the many things I’ve owned I’d have kept my RS2000, RS500, UR Quattro and TVR. And if I had to choose 2 of that 4 it would be the latter 2. Neither is a perfect car but both would still do what it says on the tin.
I venture that in a few years there may be faster things than Dans Alpine but if they don’t do anything appreciably better or stir the blood any more that the Alpine, then if I were him I’d be keeping it.
Well done, enjoy the Alpine. Great choice I think.
Thought you were on the lookout for a 987.2 2.9.
You might come to regret not having a manual gearbox and a n/a flat six, but I'm sure the Alpine will have other strong suits to overcome any of that.
As a new car, it would certainly get my vote over the new Supra, an M2C or a turbo Cayman.

Great news Dan! Long term reports please!
I love it when I read about car journalists having the same taste as me in cars.
I hope you're going for the pure edition (or base model or whatever it is) as the intense version sounds a little like a by the numbers revision to me. Also if you really are going to keep the car then you will be able to tweak it as you like anyway further down the track.
Nothing is likely to get me out of my Elise, but in a world where Lotus never existed (or if i could afford both) I would love to look into an Alpine. Definitely the sports car of the moment and unlikely to be bettered by any competitors anytime soon, as no one else makes cars like this.
Good luck on the balloon payment if do really want to buy it outright (really hope you do). I have no idea how you're supposed to pay those, refinance or something? Excited and happy for you anyway.

I had the same thinking process. I was going to go for a 2 seater.
But then I thought what if I have a family? Then what if I needed a wheelchair? Then what if I took up windsurfing?
Ended up in a Citroën Berlingo Multispace. Other than its limited track ability, I love it and it has future proofed my life.
Only a shortsighted tt would buy a 2 seater IMO.
When a man buys a given up on life car, fails to justify it to himself and goes the attack ego first. But then I thought what if I have a family? Then what if I needed a wheelchair? Then what if I took up windsurfing?

You, Sir, are the short sighted tw*t!But then I thought what if I have a family? Then what if I needed a wheelchair? Then what if I took up windsurfing?

Your thinking should mean you buy a hearse - that would cover all eventualities. From now to the grave.
Glad you aren't buying one of these. It would be a tragic waste.
When I get some toys sold, this will be my first choice.

Mine can do everything - shopping, taking the kids to school and with some uprated brakes and lower suspension sorts it for track use, though the 1.9D engine is a little lethargic around Silverstone.
Good thing is I have managed to squeeze 2 wheelchairs in the back. And as I am not a big guy, can probably get my coffin in the back too.
It's a car for life.
Going back to discussing the car rather than finance ....
I was able to drive an A110 a few weeks ago and I agree it’s a great car to drive - however and for me it’s a major however - I cannot get over the fact that the car is an automatic (even in “manual” mode it still retains the characteristics of an auto). The dealer told me that he has lost a number of sales due to the lack of a manual option.
I’m very lucky to have an Elise which is a fabulous car to drive and being manual makes the drive much more involving. In a way my “daily” drive (I commute by public transport) is even more special - a mk3 Capri - which for me is a “better” car than the A110 simply because it’s more involving and the process of driving is more basic and involving. Yes the Capri is slow and agricultural but the drive is fabulous and so enjoyable.
Clearly we’re all different and I hope Dan has many years of enjoyment from his A110.
