Is it the reading or the comprehending bit you are struggling with?

It's crystal clear from that review that the Megane 300 Trophy is a very good hot hatch.

it does irk a bit knowing that the pu ugly civic is quite a machine under the skin......

reportedly that the brakes are similar Brembos but id say the calipers on the civic are in a different league to the renaults just on the sheer size of them. theres an obvious size difference looking at those photos......

Well these are the 2 cars that I am looking at to swap my golf R for when lease runs out...

Love the look of the Mégane (in volcanic orange) the fact that it's 0% and you can get a couple of grand dealer contribution. Making true cost of new Vs new sound 150 quid more expensive a month!! (Granted that's for a civic GT ) These are the quotes I've had
So given that, I think we can all agree that it's a huge jump in price.

Trouble is I can't find anywhere to try a trophy ! and that I'm told by my loca Renault dealership the nearest RS dealer is in another county an hours drive away. So the local Honda dealership offered my the civic for a couple of hours. Wow! It really does live up to the hype! It just invites you to go round corners at ridiculous pace and does so without any threat loosing its shape.. it's nice just to tootle about in, has all the toys and plenty of room.
I'd have put a deposit down there and then if he would have budged on price on the demo.
It was that good it made me think I would have no need for my modified Exige !

But now I've cooled off a bit I really do need to try a trophy as I am a Renault RS fanboy and had many all of which have been a hoot from the theatre of a Clio V6 to the playful 175Dci Mégane.
This is proving to be almost impossible.

My dilemma is now do I buy a new one blind or Get a 12 month of civic for same monthlies ...

Do you think the fact that Honda wont budge much on price/apr means better residuals compared to the Renault?

Yes that is also a factor.. I would imagine the residuals on the Honda will be better.. but not enough to outweigh the savings made from interest free and dealer contribution. Although there is a 2019 one at lookers for 27795 which is 6k depreciation in 6 months... (Well more Vs trade in value.). If your buying cash then I guess the Honda would be a better bet financially. But I think your nuts buying new cash.

Over 3 years a new civic would cost over 20k
A new trophy 14-15k.... (Just in payments)

Yes you are right, I dont think the FK8 has sold/is selling in huge numbers in the UK for this reason (US market is huge)

In comparison to similar level cars (Golf R, AMG35, M135i etc) the deals have always been better with huge contributions and good APR/amazing lease deals

I dont see many Civics about but maybe that's just my area

I have never been too clever financially

The Honda looks very silly indeed.

The Megane at least looks like it's been styled by an adult.

It's true, but for me I'm not too bothered what people think. It's all how it drives for me.

I'm just not a fan of this one that's all, but I do really like the previous generations though. smile

It’s this real cost of ownership that makes things interesting. We bought a Focus RS at the release price meaning it cost us something like £32k with options, it’s now worth upwards of £23k 3 years later so has proved quite a sensible purchase.

Yes the Focus RS is one I should really try... As a second hand buy at circa 27k is probably the more financially sensible choice.

But I'd urge any hot hatch fans to try the FK8!

When I was in my twenties I had an Impreza STI which as we all know was a fantastic car and at the time I lived it, I recently drove another one and as a bloke closer to forty than I am thirty found it a bit embarrassing to be seen in with the spoiler, the gold wheels etc. For me the Civic would have that same embarrassment factor, it looks like a Max Power project car and for that reason I’d buy the Megane or a Golf. I reckon the sales figures for the Civic will back up my point as well, I’m sure it’s an amazing drive though!

I can understand that. I felt the same when had the Clio V6 in my late 20's. Hated driving it through town etc. But now ironically I've got older I give less care as to what people think and the way the civic drives really does compensate for the embarrassment it may give to people who care too much of what others think.

Certainly not a car for the vain/image conscious, good job there are many vanilla options (that are not as good to drive) out there for those who still think people care/look at what they drive smile

Why has the Civic attracted so much negative feedback on the looks when umpteen Japanese cars have had equally massive spoilers, skirts etc.?

I can't ever recall this much negativity with the Subaru/Mitsubishi body kits.

Having said that, I'd struggle to buy a civic without taking it to a body shop for a slight makeover. A rear delete would be easy as would smoothing over those arches. The result may be a minor change in aero but on the road I doubt it'd make much difference.

So the Civic is a better drive, well done Honda. I think the Civic looks better too. The Megane is a good looking car but I think a lot of that is down to the paint, which is a gorgeous colour. The Civic just looks so aggressive, there's nothing else quite like it on the market. It reminds me of a Group A rally car a bit.

i can imagine guys of that age would still feel embarrassed when driving a euro box that makes farting gearshift noises.......l might not have gold wheels or a big spoiler but you'll still feel a tit.

I would be embarrassed driving the CTR on the public road at any age. And I normally don't care about image or what other people think as the driving experience counts far more for me. But I'll have to make an exception despite the CTR being such a good steer. On the other hand I am glad it exists and I am sure it makes their owners very happy which is the main thing.

Kind of highlights you are very conscious of your image. Which is fine, most are tbh

I'd still usher anyone to try it!
