Understated with 4 exhaust pipes!!! lol, keep dreaming buddy Could easily pick one out any day. Makes me laugh when you get your VW fan boy come up with this comment.
I dont even like golfs and I think it looks fairly understated.C.A.R. said:
Golf for me- just prefer the understated look.
I actually prefer the bumpers on the GTI / GTD model than those on the R, which almost look more restrained!

That's one of the reasons I sold my S3 to be honest, a car that fast needs to signal it a bit. I think Merc gets it just right with the aero parts, the A45 looks just right to me given the performance.

A car enthusiast could easily pick one out. Most other people wouldn't be able to tell the difference between a GTI/GTD/R/R-Line other than by looking at the badges. In the time I had my Golf R, I never got a single comment about it. When I had a Megane 265, I got lots of comments and that's still a lot more subtle than a Civic Type-R.

When are you ringing yours and what's your target lap time? (I assume you'll have proper tyres rather than when you spun that BMW of yours )
On a serious note I’d love to take it on a track day to get the most out of it but the tyres will cost an arm and a leg.According to the Type R owners club, that size tyre (245/30/20) is only made for the Civic and the front wheels of a Lamborghini. 220 a pop, I thought I’ll be saving money on tyres after selling the BMW. Believe it or not, I read the Conti sport contact 6’s are prone to aqua planing so I swapped over to P Zeros. The roads are safe now
To me "Hot Hatch" means a standard hatchback that is revved up a bit but affordable.
Golf GTI, Peugeot 205 GTI are the sort of standard bearers. I'd say about the £30K mark. 6-8 secs to 60?
The A45, Golf R, Audi RS3 etc in my opinion are something else. They're hatchbacks which are not just breathed on but completely reworked, often by offshoot companies. They have 10 year old supercar performance, often 4wd and cost £40K plus. Super hot hatch? Hyper Hatch? These really go beyond the original concept of a slightly nippy and sporty looking family car.
Obviously this is not a bad thing, just a different market.

Having just gone through the selection process that is what I was originally looking at and expecting.Golf GTI, Peugeot 205 GTI are the sort of standard bearers. I'd say about the £30K mark. 6-8 secs to 60?
Then an email from DTD turned up offering an ultra modern car, quicker than my old V8 TVR, with 4WD, 40mpg on a run and all the latest gizmos for that price. I also liked how it looked so was immediately sold. Looks and drives like a much more expensive car to me.
I know the A45 is coming (although probably way too pricey) but I don't think I will go off the A35 as it is too slow. I'll leave that car to the younger boy racers out there.
And as this seems to have turned into a Civic thread: I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder but jeez that is one ugly car IMHO. Almost Fiat Multipla levels. Is it like the "cabbage patch doll" psychology, you love it because it's so ugly?

In the R’s defence over the quad pipes, it’s very good marketing as everyone thinks they’re very quick (which they are).
My own 5 year old nephew points them out and says they’re quicker than my Civic because I have 3 exhausts. Wait til he’s old enough to know about the Nurburgring
Do you overtake lots of Golf Rs when you are at the ring?My own 5 year old nephew points them out and says they’re quicker than my Civic because I have 3 exhausts. Wait til he’s old enough to know about the Nurburgring

He doesn't go because tyres are too expensive. tommy1973s said:
For those of us of a certain age (cheerfully past it), anything with a turbo / auto / 4WD / will never be a convincing 'hot hatch' ...
The template was and remains:
- light
- practical (plenty of space for family and shopping - everyday cars, not sports cars)
- front wheel drive
- responsiveness at real-world road speeds more important than outright speed / power
- track-day ability irrelevant
- optional 5 doors
- max 4-cyl (for lightness, balance and economy)
- not too dear
- no overly-aggressive styling
- manual
- naturally aspirated (for a proper throttle response)
It's the junior / warm hatches that get closest, though weight and mpg means turbos are mandatory
There was me thinking I used to drive a hot hatch in the early 90s (Renault 5 GT Turbo). The template was and remains:

What was it then?

He doesn't go because tyres are too expensive. How close do you think you would have come from the time on that flag on your first attempt?

It's quite funny actually as in another thread you said you were going to start track days. Have you downgraded to beer? Doing the Ring is a holiday BTW, and if it isn't, it's not incompatible.

Where? I said I’d love to do them but said tyres are too expensive, 220 each plus insurance, tuition, fuel and everything else adds up. Nothing wrong with that! How close do you think you would have come from the time on that flag on your first attempt?
Seeing as I’m not allowed to use the ring time as a reference to prove my car is faster than a Golf R, I’ll post a link instead

Out of interest, what was the Golf's time around the Nordschleife?Seeing as I’m not allowed to use the ring time as a reference to prove my car is faster than a Golf R, I’ll post a link instead
