My SL350 Merc which is only the 245bhp version costs me £198 fully comp and my E220 Diesel Merc is only £175.

I think some of you guys are paying the BMW premium.

As above, the UK really is comparitively cheaper than a lot of other countries, despite recent increases as a result, in part, to claims culture.

I live in Ireland where where I pay c. €850 TPF&T and motor tax is a further €950 p/a. That insurance is considered very reasonable.

In reality, the tax works out at about €1,070 on a 2.2L when I pay quarterly.

Granted average wages may be slightly higher but not so much as to off set the premiums being charged.

Depends where you live. I'm in Manchester and our 12 year old Corolla Verso is £650 fully comp with max no claims bonus and no claims in the last 12 years. My Dad pays same for a Toyota C-HR.

As a young driver that recently got a £900 insurance quote for a Toyota Aygo, I agree with your statement furious
My son recently went on holiday with his grandmother, to the USA. His travel insurance, aged 20, was £18. Hers was £385!!!

I don't hear youngsters complaining about this!

I refuse to pay £500+ for insurance on a diesel, especially as last year it cost me only £342.

Thanks folks

For anything with a high insurance group the best you are looking at is around £500. The reality is the value of the car makes little difference. I was paying about £650 to insure my RS6 and now pay about £500 for a crappy A6 diesel. (20 yr NCD, no points)

The RS6 was 3 times as powerful and worth about 3 times as much and probably many more times likely to be stolen too.

IME the best thing to do now is just go on compare the market and that's about as cheap as you will get.

Track cars and weekend toys are generally insured on a different basis (IME) and (again IME) you are usually looking about 1% of the value of the vehicle for limited miles coverage.

Several people have made the point that the higher performance car is not always the more expensive one to insure.

And yet being a more powerful car seems to be the one reason for higher premiums that people are more willing to accept.

"Well you know of course the insurance is expensive, what with 500BHP it's a tricky beast to handle. Of course, I've not had an accident in it but, well, other owners aren't so < insert adjective according to the level of humblebrag you wish to achieve > .... "

"Obviously I opted for the model that all the experts deem to be the very < insert superlative > in it's class, but that does make it attractive to those nasty thieves as well. Yes, the insurance is expensive but that's just a cross I have to bear for the honour of owning one"

Yesterday I was complaining having paid £570 to insure both the Range Rover and (Impreza) P1. The P1 is the cheaper of the two coming in at £266 for the year (fully comp). Maybe I'm just old.

I'm amazed that insurance is so cheap, considering the huge costs of repairs these days for even quite minor damage.

I'm amazed it's so cheap, given that they are providing £50m tp property damage cover, and unlimited tp injury cover.

I insured my 2012 Mercedes C250 Coupe last month for £320 fully comp with business cover. Im collecting a new to me car next week 2011 Range Rover Sport HSE Ive to pay an additional £94 for the year ( same insurer ) I reckon come next June I should be able to insure the Range Rover for sub £400 easily.
I change cars very frequently, predominantly Mercedes, Audi, BMW and havent paid over £400 for insurance in the past 15 years - and that included a BMW 650.

Speaking to Adrian Flux yesterday
Would be part of the reason....

I've just asked them to switch my cover from a mundane diesel Skoda to a higher-performance but cheaper Volvo and the premium has doubled, plus their £30 fee

Looking elsehwere, I've come back with a new policy for only a few quid a month more than I was paying. of course the broker I was may well have been against the Volvo and starting afresh may well have been different though

This.

When my E90 was involved in a very minor bump, it was sent to BMW for repair. They did a fab job, but the bumper was replaced rather than repaired and I drove around in an F30 330d for a week. Nuts when you think about it. I didn’t request that it was sent to BMW, AXA just said that’s where it’s going.

I’m currently paying just over £600 a year on my M140 which doesn’t seem too bad having just left a company car scheme after eight years, with a claim from a few years ago on a car that’s quite quick and is at a risk of going walkies.

It’s not really about this BHP or that BHP, it’s more to do with claims history for that particular model and where you live.

The OP might be able to shave a bit off with another insurer but it won’t be night and day.

My M6 and my wife’s 21 year old Golf are nearly the same.

She can well afford that if she's a pensioner. The nouveau riche apparently.

Count yourself lucky OP,

£500 sounds reasonable.

I'm currently getting quotes for my C350 estate (265bhp diesel)... to make matter worse I now have a non-fault claim on file due to a text/driving dick head going into the back of me last year.

South Manchester, 8 years no claims, current quotes are £400 more than last year taking it over the £1000 barrier. So I now have to pay more due to someone going into the back of me? I didn't get a hire car while mine was repaired, nor did I claim for whiplash...

Fair or what?

She can afford it. But insurance isn't based on what you can afford, it's based on risk.

Mine is over £600 bit it's a modified MX-5 and I've had a claim in the last 5 years that although I had no claims protection I still have to declare. It would be a little under £500 without the crash so an extra £120/130 a year for something that cost a lot more to repair seems pretty good. If the car wasn't modified I'd be looking at under £300.
I have been looking at M235i as a possible future purchase or a Boxster S and both cost about the same as I'm paying now.
As has been said try adding different people onto it, I've done that in the past with my dad, brother, sister and fiance and get various quotes depending on who I add or remove. It's currently at its cheapest with just me but has been cheaper with others

Insurance is calculated on previous history of everything, its a complete statistics analysis. The likelihood is that the car in question is high risk because there are lots of claims for them compared to other cars. Also your job can affect the cost, as can age, postcode etc etc.

A good example was when I sold my Nissan S13. I was paying £900ish a year for it, everything declared. The guy who bought it off me was younger, just wrote off a car, but had a different job and postcode and he got it for £700 through the same insurer... That was slightly frustrating but I saw a social media post of it on the back of a recovery truck and it hasn't been MOTd since so I feel less annoyed now.

Anyway, I digress. That price isn't bad for insurance these days, it sucks but has to be done.
