I didn't think it was possible for the golf to get any more bland looking...

The latest pictures show that it doesn't actually look that bad - but what I don't see is any real progress over the Mk7.5, other than the extra power.

Not surprising really, the Mk 7.5 is IMO a pretty polished thing. Anything I am missing on mine e.g. would require making the thing more expensive -- e.g. better passive suspension, couple of buttons back, real dials instead of TFT...

Which they can't really do due to margins, with the Covid situation even more so. Think it's actually not bad if they can keep the price more or less as is. The whole infotainment revamp, while not primary concern for PHers, will have cost quite a bit. And the GTIs will need to contribute back to fund the development effort.

aren't those Pretoria Golf R wheels, which then went onto the Clubsport S....not Clubsport S to R..

Anyway. Nice bump in power, just as AMG and BMW have level pegged..

Rather an R than a BMW M. Much more classy vehicle not driven by (generally) tools.

It will do very well, it won't be boring (but it will be fashionable on here to say it is) and will be excellent to live with, just like the 7/7.5.

If you want a hot hatch that shakes your teeth out, is noisy & impractical, looks like someone ram raided Halfords and requires 10/10ths all the time, WTF are you buying a hatchback for? Buy a sports car. The whole reason for a hot hatch existing is to do hatch first and hot second - precisely what the Golf does (and excellently).
Post of the thread, mate Mk 2 Golf ruled for precisely those same reasons. You only could afford one car and it had to do it all. The 205 and the 5 were appallingly-badly built (Golf strongly built); 205s exploded on impact (seen plenty in breaker's yards, easily the least crashworthy vehicle I've ever seen); too small inside and the 205 didn't even have rear doors. And the 205's twitchy handling (much loved by show-off journalists) meant that, in the hands of ordinary people, the Golf was faster over a challenging back road. Just easier to drive. Sure, the 205 was prettier and a lot of fun as a sports car, but if you were a bloke with a family or dependants and could just afford one car, the 205 was not a serious option. And neither is the cringey-looking Civic. It looks as if it was designed by a 90s TWOCer, in the dark.

Not exactly got a lot to work with though, have they?

With a brief of, it must look like the last Golf and it can't be too outlandish.

Seriously they make the r lines look sportier than the actual R.

I'm sure the design meeting for the R was a room full of german engineers and a drawning of a golf match and then someone says let's add 4 stty quad exhausts, they all agree they're finished then they all leave for a bratwurst and a stein of beer.

Came in to make this point.

I know VW don't typically mess with the way the Golf looks but I think they've gotten it wrong this time. It looks every inch a Corolla.

The Mk.7 was very smart, this new one not so.

The Megane RS-style lights in the Mk8 GTI’s front bumper are the fog lights, right? And as seen in the pic above, the Mk8 R doesn’t have the Megane RS-style lights - so where are the R’s fog lights located? confused
Also, I foresee a modding trend: Mk8 GTI owners swapping their car’s fugly and kitsch front bumper for an R’s more discreet version. Damn sure I would.

Crickey, that's a helluva saggy arse rear bumper - WTF?

Hopefully, whoever styled the Arteon R shooting brake is already working on the Mk8 R's refresh. And until then, no ta, but can I please have a Mk7.5 R - despite its many minor(ish) faults.

Meanwhile, What Car? has given the base spec Mk4 Leon a 5-star thumbs up, which bodes well for the next Cupra: "The latest Seat Leon is a fantastic all-rounder. If you're looking for a fun-to-drive family hatchback with a roomy interior and loads of standard kit, it should be right at the top of your shortlist.'

I have to say on the whole I like that. More aggression all round, looks wider, more squatter, nice roof spoiler, much better brakes. I don't like the wheels and the exhaust pipes needs some trims to fatten them up but that will be a great daily weapon.

Hard to think they've gone to that, from this:

I'm not a VW fan but I'd be hard pressed to turn away an offer of one of those if it was waived in my face. Anything post mk2....can respect the performance aspects but they literally don't illicit any emotional response to me whatsoever - unlike the mk1.

So do you think that the modern car should look like that?

That's hardly an inspiring design either is it? Tacked on plastic trims, stretched tyres and a slammed suspension don't do much for it either.

The angled slats on the lower grille are riveted - disguise or prototype?
