It will do very well, it won't be boring (but it will be fashionable on here to say it is) and will be excellent to live with, just like the 7/7.5.
If you want a hot hatch that shakes your teeth out, is noisy & impractical, looks like someone ram raided Halfords and requires 10/10ths all the time, WTF are you buying a hatchback for? Buy a sports car. The whole reason for a hot hatch existing is to do hatch first and hot second - precisely what the Golf does (and excellently).
People are definitely going too extreme with what is required to make a hatch 'hot' I definitely don't think it's about 6min 19s ring times, but this (and the golf mk8) go too far the other way by a mile.If you want a hot hatch that shakes your teeth out, is noisy & impractical, looks like someone ram raided Halfords and requires 10/10ths all the time, WTF are you buying a hatchback for? This is just a hatchback with a badge. 1000 miles removed from a car you might take the long way to work just to enjoy the pleasure of the drive. You need the 20" 4k, OLED, monitor in the dash just so the satnav can remind you you're still in a car and moving.

Just to offer a counterpoint: I think the GTI is just that, but German style. Taking the long way to work over here means weaving in an unrestricted stretch of Autobahn and trying to reach entertaining speeds in the process. The GTIs are usually rather good at that. VMax record for me (245 PS "Perf' mk7.5, no mods) is 267 kph indicated (long downhill stretch on the A3 @ early COVID level of traffic). Childish, silly and not everybody's idea of "fun". But the resulting product is a very practical car that with fast A-B capabilities and little ask on the driver. Ideal daily driver for PHers that have something else for the weekend? But a bit boring for an only vehicle supposed to do both, the fun and the A-B car?
I really don't understand the partisanship here. Hot hatch world still has a surprising amount of choice, despite the vehicle class being endangered by global SUV adoption and CO2 targets. Better celebrate that while it lasts, and not debate if i30n, Megane RS, Type-R or hot MQB box is top of the top.

It may just be me but the blue car looks like it's running Michelin Cross-climates!?...one would assume MPSS would be the more obvious choice.
Really can't get excited by the car I have to say.
They're not cross-climates, they're winter tyres.Really can't get excited by the car I have to say.

Does anyone think the release of the mk8 GTI will have much impact on used mk7 prices? I would really like a mk7 but a little out of my price range at present.
Good question. Ordinarily, there’d obviously be lots of previous gen’ cars for sale because of upgrading. But the Mk8 seems to be more divisive because of its chavtastic styling and knob-less cabin.
But if the Mk8 is half as much fun to drive as the pre-launch hype suggests – a GTI with deliberate lift-off oversteer??!! – and because i30Ns and Civic Type-Rs are both getting a bad rep due to gearbox woes and voided warranties, the Mk8 could be a huge hit?
If so, there’ll be lots of Mk7s being traded in...

That's hardly an inspiring design either is it? Tacked on plastic trims, stretched tyres and a slammed suspension don't do much for it either.
Its a timeless classic car design....whilst the latest is just....oh another mark 999 rehash of a rehash of a rehash of a rehash.....Sorry, you must be young or something, clearly you just don't get it.
One is a classic....one will never be.

So do you think that the modern car should look like that?
Not exactly you are reading far more into what I actually said, as I never said "the latest car should look exactly like this from 40 years ago" did I ?However I am pointing out that despite its old basic design to me the mk1 was still a hell of a lot stylish that the latest IMO...
where did they go so far wrong and it end up so dull and boring looking and practicality and size counted most above everything trying to please all the people all the time ?
The constant size changes probably factor into it a lot also.
I woudn't expect the modern golf to look exactly like that but now which one I'd have over the other. Also which one would apprecate or depreciate too !

Yes they will, and due to how well sold (or leased) the mk7 was there is no shortage of supply. I expect mk7 prices to continue to drop, I suspect eventually they will be the cheapest R model available on the market. They are already playing crossover with the rarer and prettier mk6, and however more ‘capable’ they are, they just aren’t purchased for driver enjoyment. Be patient if you want one, or look for more fun/less bland alternatives. Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
