a performance car for people who have no interest in performance cars

audi always had a bad rep for making dull to drive performance cars but this takes it to a new level lol

As in keep up when both of you are doing 70 mph on an M-way right?

How much bik would the s4 attract at 40%? £6k a year?

S4 range = 572 miles
Model 3 range = 329 miles

Not a problem for most people but should be considered if you're a motorway cruiser

This +1000

I'm sure its an amazing "car", but a true performance car needs so much more. Revs, noise, entertaining handling.

I’m not, diesel S cars is ridiculous, it’s all down to meeting emissions targets and nothing about driving fun which an S car should be. Made all the more ridiculous that the petrol V6’s are now going into SUV’s like the Cayenne and Touareg.
Dont think it makes much difference. This car still wouldn't be remotely fun to drive with a petrol engine.

you're looking at it wrong, this is a company car and nothing else

many businesses only allow diesel cars, I think a large amount of these will be on business lease.

I'd rather have a used e63, just a few years old for £30k, 550hp, looks just as fresh and new and much faster and nicer to drive in every way.

in 3 years you'll have saved about £15k in depreciation vs the audi which will offset all of the fuel + you've saved £20k in the first place which offsets all servicing and fuel anyway + you have a nicer car

Let's set aside for a moment the totally unintegrated ipad super glued to the dashboard infotainment which ruins an otherwise lovely looking interior.

It's not a small price to pay though, is it? From an both a safety, tactility and ergonomics point of view touchscreens in cars for me just don't work. I've never been near one that has even come close to a good old fashioned iDrive knob, and trying to stab a random bit of a touchscreen whilst keeping attention on the road is stupid when a well positioned and tactile button worked well. It's a huge - no, massive - leap backwards imho.

And to be honest, much like the Focus ST from the other day and countless other modern cars, I'd love an option to not have that god awful screen ruining the interior but whilst I could probably compromise on that for the right car, a touch screen I won't.

Having owned a >400bhp Diesel in the past and currently hacking around in an S3, then I can only say that I am very disappointed that Audi have called this an S.

I sippose this will be the differentiator now between the S and the RS models, but no performance diesel can ever really match the feel of driving a powerful petrol where revs matter.

A fast diesel is a fine thing to drive on the road. However, they can never be described as "sporty." Devastatingly fast and efficient yes. Sporting and fun. No absolutely not.

A step backwards I think.

Really, a diesel S4.....

It's also very ugly and looks so conservative, Hyundai like...

My B7 V8 S4 was the way to go, this is just not a drivers car at all.

You're also looking at it wrong. You will be able to lease one of these for less than PCP monthly payments on an e63

Quite. Why do people who completely fail to grasp what a performance is decide to post on Pistonheads?

Performance diesels - An oxymoron for morons.

As someone who ran a A6 Bitdi for 5 years, this is a fast diesel but not an S, and probably like the new S6 should be called an A4/6 60 Tdi
S cars should always be special, but not balls out like the RS variants.
Its why i went for one of the last S6 V8's as a replacement as the new offerings were far too meh

Have you ever driven an Alpina D3 (3.0 litre)? Pretty sure one could keep up with a C63. Very quick car.

Going diesel is probably the right move, seeing as 95% of people who want an S4 really just want a top-of-the-line A4. A slightly showy, fast cruiser.

The V6 petrol S4 was an anonymous blob of a car anyway, so might as well get mid 40s to the gallon on that run to Birmingham.

Think you’ve been reading too many Internet forums, have you even driven one? Even the previous gen B8 & 8.5 were a decent steer. Not the last word in on the limit handling but Audi re engineered the gearbox on that generation so the engine wasn’t hanging way ahead of the front axle like on previous models.

I think this will be an exciting car to drive, all that torque with AWD in an Audi S car could be fun
I think the total opposite. Depends what you are used to I suppose.
Agreed.
I’ve had experience of most generations of S4. Capable and swift, yes, but exciting?! Not even close.
But infotainment systems don’t give me a hard on, so I’m no long Audi target market which suits me fine.

Despite not being an Audi fan in general I quite like the sound of this, quick day to day with fun handling for those moments in 25k a year that I can have some fun!

Estate version please so room for the dogs and general crap, not that I can remotely afford one!

It would be interesting if PH when referencing MPG in articles like this could instead of taking the book figure, just zero the trip at the start of their ‘drive’ and let us know what the car gets in real world PH style driving.......

I think this is a real shame and shows an equal amount of both laziness and complacency from Audi.

Clearly there is an issue with emissions regs and the petrol V6 Turbo in the S4, S5, SQ5 etc - see the suspension of production last year - but rather than attempting to fix it they have decided to take an engine they had sitting on a shelf, put up the price and foist it upon customers who have no idea where diesel taxation will be in 6 months time. I wont have another with a diesel engine in it

S cars were always more GT cars than all out sports cars, but I cant help but think that this devalues the S badge.

S cars should be petrol. They always have been and should have remained the same.

Interesting numbers on the Tesla...

A D3 would see where it went but would be far from keeping up

D3
1/4 mile 13.2
0-60 in 4.9
0-100 in 11.2

C63 (W205)
1/4 mile 11.9
0-60 in 3.8
0-100 in 8.1
