I think anybody thinking of buying any diesel in the UK needs their head examining. Regardless of how good , how clean and how economical they are the truth is they will be sacrificed by the government to appease the eco-warriors who now seem to be running this countries environmental policies. I'll be stunned if we don't see significantly higher road tax and fuel costs for diesels in the very near future and let's be honest the only reason to buy diesel over petrol is running costs.
Its a 2 year lease, so why would a buyer care about what will happen after the 2 years are up and he has moved on...

Lease prices will rise and leases don't include fuel simples. With no deal Brexit now on the cards the British love affair with German cars could be coming to an end.

Don’t really understand the haters. I have an M2Comp for fun stuff and a 530d for other stuff and I love driving the 530 with that dieselly torque and it’s relaxed nature on motorways. Not everyone wants to wind a car out to 8000 rpm all the time but yes, we’re still petrolheads who recognise that for real world driving a fast diesel makes total sense. See separate thread about someone choosing a 530d over the 540i (with the ‘Supra’ engine) on EVO’s recommendation.

Would you still have bought an M20d comp? I personally wouldn't.

A 530d is fine as it has no M car pretensions.

Although I freely admit to being a VAG hater so this just adds to my opinion that Audi are complete fktards.

As if they didn't fk the diesel industry enough, they're now pushing them on their S models lol.

I've found you can chuck the outgoing S4 around in the twisties and be entertained,
Would I take it on a track day? - Probably not ( and yes, it's against the terms of my lease)
Would I swap it for an S4 diesel? - No, I get 22 p per mile form the company as opposed to 14, and if treated nicely can do this:

Would I have it as a company car, rather than an opt out purchase? No - The BIK cost more than the rentals even for 15k a year. (so I make that a free car)

Will it keep up with a c63?

No.
Off topic for a moment, I had a s4 for a year in 2017 and found it a very good car particularly 0-80 wise. I've hankered after a c63 w204 for ages but wasnt sure if it would actually be/feel any faster in normal driving with the gearbox tech in the s4 and 4wd..

As someone who has both could you enlighten please

As a hard Brexit could very well have the same implications for all imported vehicles, what are the genuine British alternatives to, say, a 5 series / Audi A6 / Merc E?

No.
Of course it won't, RS4 was for that.
However, you know you could ask MRC to take it to Stage 2. Then it would close that 150 bhp gap to the C63.

This somehow looks garish and dull at the same time.

I don't think I've seen a better excuse to get a humdrum commuter and a fun weekend car than this.

Jaguar XF. Designed and engineered by a largely british workforce in Warwickshire, built by british workers in Birmingham.

Dont come round here with your "not british because of Indian investment 11 years ago" s***t...

Great. Choice of one. Judging by the XE we owned from 2015 - 2018, it’s likely to be a pile of badly made, poorly supported crap.

The British car industry doesn’t compete on the world stage. Aside from the niches, it’s products are woefully behind pretty much any other developed country’s manufacturers

Diesel is ste, diesel is cr@p, no fast car could ever be fun ran on diesel, blah, blah, blah.

Anyone thinks this, really needs to go look at some of the madness coming out of Darkside Developments. I'm not saying that diesel is superior or a good fit for an S series car in any way, shape or form....... I'm just trying to make the point that there is more to diesel than taxi's and Transit's! wink

Newer S4s have always been pretty dull so this getting a diesel doesnt really matter. I quite like it, would make a nice daily and mile muncher but you'd still want something fun for the weekends.

It doesn't matter how good it is, it is now considered rightly or wrongly to be the root of all evil and will be priced and legislated out of existence. I like turbo diesel torque and have had a few but the eco warriors now rule and they despise the fuel.

I think that Diesel will be legislated out, but I doubt it will be in the timeframe most would look to own a S4. It will be a number of years yet as there are too many diesels on the road. You may see a steady increase in tax, but nothing drastic

There’s probably not much in it off the line. The c63 box is slower witted than the S4’s but then you add 4wd, to help the s4 off the line, then take a bit off for a bit of lag and it evens up again.
The C is much more of an event though aurally and gets so much more attention and many more positive comments than the S.

The S4 feels like the fastest a comfortable anonymous mid range car should go.
The c63 feels like the most comfortable you can be whilst being strapped to an awesome engine.

I hope that makes sense.

I really like the idea of the old rs4 and s4 with a V8.

The 2.0 diesel makes sense as company transport for high mileage but in not really understanding this car.

Surely the fwd 2.0 turbo petrol will be more fun due to the significantly lower weight, give similar fuel consumption and save 15 grand?

Where's it come from that Audi have overtaken BMW in the infotainment stakes? Audi seem to have dropped the sensible 'mouse' for touchscreen only. Touchscreen is an awful thing compared to some point and click hardware you can learn without trying to point a shaking hand at some miniscule icon on a screen.

That’s what’s in the s3 though. Got to have some headroom from that. You still can’t fit anyone with legs in the back of an S4 so they have to distinguish it somehow.
