Do certain cars suit an age group?
Discussion
I think for most people their car choice is down to necessity rather than desire. Young? Cheap to run and insure, Single and affluent? Something to show off. Family? Practical and safe. High mileage? Frugal with toys. City living? Small and easy to park. etc.
The real test is their choice of second (or even third) car, as this will be more likely to represent what they really want, rather than need.

Anything expensive is usually >40 as they're the only ones able to afford to buy & run them...

If you need to pay for a big house, an expensive wife and a couple of kids in private, you may have less disposable cash than in your 20s...https://www.statista.com/statistics/369007/people-...
I'm 23 and have the repmobile favourite Audi A4 TDI in "sporty and youthful" S-Line spec but not in resale white or flat black; mine is finished in a pub furniture- esque shade of dark red/burgundy (Matador Red to be precise). I love it but I've had the "lovely car but I wouldn't have that colour" kind of comments from day one.
In my driving career I've had a Hyundai i30 in Alpine Blue christened "the mam-mobile" and had three Skoda Fabia's (one was a Monte Carlo!) which again I got the old woman jibes for.

This reminds me of a game a mate and I used to play on long journeys going to race meetings some years ago to ease the boredom on long trips.
Based on the car we were about to catch up to we'd try to guess what sort of driver it would have.
As in if it was a Metro doing 50 it would usually be an older housewife, but if it was doing 65 it was usually a youngster in Mum's car!
Actually we're going on a trip tomorrow - we'll have to revive it!
And add in the "Angry Dad" category for Zafiras, Scenics, etc. that are being ragged to death.

Yeah absolutely. I've always liked the Fiesta ST's, they're more for younger drivers but that said you see quite a lot people from any age driving them.
My cousin said i didn't look old enough to drive the 340i (24 when i bought it and I look young)
Mate at work drives a new Merc C class. We ask if it's his dad's car as he's 21.
Car models are always 'aimed' at a part of the population, but noone has to abide by that. Drive whatever the hell you want!

That makes sense - when I was 20 (a long time ago) I wanted a 3 litre Capri, but insurance was a nightmare! My cousin said i didn't look old enough to drive the 340i (24 when i bought it and I look young)

So I bought a P6 Rover 3500S which was really aimed at the "pipe and slippers" brigade, but was also a quick car back in the late 70s.

Hmmm interesting. Female (not that it matters) 34 with a M4 coupe (prev a 35is Z4 which I bought at 29), a 595 competizione Abarth, R32 skyline GTR and a V8 supercharged Petrol Range Rover sport......oh and I live smack bang in the centre of Edinburgh (and when I say that I mean I can see Lord Melville and Edinburgh Castle from my living room) so I’m covering quite a few basis there. But then a Range Rover is needed with the cobbles and state of the roads! both me and my parter walk to work so really there is no need but we like cars and I love to work in them when I can (I trained as a mechanic in my teens) The real test is their choice of second (or even third) car, as this will be more likely to represent what they really want, rather than need.

Fantastic - that's blown some stereotypes! Edited by MGirl on Saturday 20th July 23:35

OK, so a wild guess but is it Red?
Purple actually. My Cooper S and Type R were red, my 135i was black and my 35is was deep sea blue. My M4 is Yas Marina Blue (even though I thought I’d go Austin gold as Phoenix yellow in the E46 is my all time fave). The R32 is Dark Blue with gold wheels, the 595 is two shades of grey (campovolo and record grey) with white wheels and the RR sport is Stornaway Grey because I refuse to have a black one....even if he thinks it’s ‘gangster’ Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
