I ran a 928s4 about ten years ago, bought under incredible circumstances with a bash in the rear wing and no papers from a Lothario leaving the country in a hurry for the princely sum of £500...now THAT was a poor man's Porsche.
I can confirm that these are capable of turning you into a poor man...biggrin

They are rather nice, though.
Loved it.

911 is just the self conscious, poorly endowed mans beetle anyway.

German cars bring out the bizarre side of people.

Surely the poor man’s Ferrari? Must be other examples of a poor man’s Ferrari too (if we’re allowed to divert the thread from insulting Porsche owners).

In my humble opinion (as someone who's owned neither), the 911 and Boxster are simply different cars. One is a rear-engined GT with four seats, and the other a mid-engined sports car with two seats. The sneering comments about the Boxster being a poor man's 911 are usually from reverse snobs and jealous individuals who own neither. From the outside, it's as non-sensical as saying an Exige is a poor man's Evora (which nobody ever says!).

I know that Porsche probably don't like it but I often read that the Cayman is actually a much better car to drive than the 911. I don't know if that is actually true though because I haven't driven either, but I've read it a few times in reviews/magazines.

I’ve had four 911/Carreras over the years, and recently looked at another. It just confirmed my view that the 911has become less and less what the original car was originally about. These days, the modern equivalent in the range to the old 964 I loved so much is the Cayman, and if I’d bought another Porsche, that’s what I would have gone for.

But the Cayman isn’t cheap, and since it is also more of a 911 than the modern one, I don’t think you could reasonably say it was a ‘Poor Man’s Porsche’ or even a ‘Poor Man’s 911’.

If you want a 911 experience on a budget, then get a 996. Not exactly cheap, but brilliant value for what you get, and the last properly 911 911 IMHO.

I've driven a couple of Cayman Ss, but never a 911, so can't comment, but yes, I've heard that too. The Cayman certainly has the ingredients to be better.

Yes, but I don’t actually like 911s. The Cayman is my daily driver. My weekend toy is a Murcielago.

I agree. The fundamental difference is their respective polar moment of inertia. Very low in the mid engined car and relatively high in the 911. This translates into a different driving experience : the Cayman is better on turn in and the 911 has a traction advantage past the apex. I prefer the Cayman irrespective of price.

Thee is some hardcore cringe in this thread.

RIP the cringe thread.

Please, someone, resurrect it. It would be amazing, we have got even more fragile, egotistical and plain wky posters now than we ever did for the original. biggrin

I've had a 996, 997, raced Boxsters and 924s, and theyre all very good. So there we are.

But lets get into this cheese on toast for breakfast thing. Thats odd, although I'm weirdly tempted to give it a go. Brown sauce with it?

In fairness, i'd be much more inclined to start up a car chat if I saw someone with a Skoda Rapid than say, a GT3. I reckon the Rapid owner will be full of good stories. The GT3 driver, less so.

Cheese on toast? Is it? Sounds quite luxurious to me

I have a acquaintance who could afford literally any car, drives a Kangoo.

When I bought my base Cayman 987, I had a budget of £15k in mind, and it turned out, for me, the very best car I could buy at that price wasn't a 996, but a 987. For a road car, I think it's slightly too fast, but it's beautiful to drive.

And for the £10k ish I paid for it, i have budget left to play around, and keep it running. It's much cheaper to run than a 996 would have been.

I’ve always thought there was something nonchalant about a base spec 911 with a manual gearbox of any generation.
Agreed. I'd be more than happy with a manual 2wd NA 996.

At 17 I found mine to be a little bit too hot to handle in the wet and I wrapped it around a lamp post! frown

It put me off RWD for quite a few years...but it did teach me a good lesson though. driving
