Did anyone else see the McLaren made to park next to the portaloos as it wasn't allowed to park on the show field?
Yeah, was a Mclaren press car
I turned away a brand new Aston Martin Prototype from our show at Goodwood as the entry criteria was strictly pre-2001.

Great pics Peri, what a varied selection! My mate was there with his Avocado Green SD1 2600, I was supposed to go with him but work got in the way sadly.

I totally agree! I am capable of getting points in a sub 190bhp merc 300e. I don't need ever faster cars. I think it's an age thing as well - cars that were around when we were young become interesting.

As I become older (I'm 35 now!) I find a lot of joy in driving old cars reasonably enthusiastically rather than super fast cars at a fraction of their potential. I sometimes feel a bit sorry for drivers of 500bhp+ cars. It must be very frustrating.
I’m 49 and drive a thoroughly modern hybrid X5 and a Golf R and yet I’m sorely disappointed to have missed this! Whenever I see a Capri, Cortina, Cavalier, a Metro or a Maestro, an Escort or an Astra I can’t help but want to drive them. I rarely go for a drive in my car or my wife’s as the X5 is so thoroughly dull and boring and the golf so competent it’s boring. I do remember having a Cavalier GLS and thrashing the nads off it. I pretended to my friends it had a sport button (it was a grey button in the dash that was for the rear screen I think) they were in on the joke but it always amused. It would understeer, sometimes not want to stop, Rev to a million (how impressed was I that it did 60 in second gear). I love driving and all of these would be fun to drive..... to me ...... fun in an interesting, getting used to it kind of way. Driving is often not about going fast, never about style and always about effort and extracting fun

As I'm sure some know, the Austin Apache was styled by Michelotti who also did Triumphs.

I have to admit that I am struggling with this.

I'm always going on about the difference between a "classic" car and an "old" car, most of the above fit in to the "old" bucket for me i'm afraid.

I know it's subjective but just as an example:

Ford Cortina 1.3 L = Old
Ford Cortina 1600E = Classic

BMW E30 316i auto = Old
BMW E30 320i and above manual = Classic (anything with the 6 cylinder and preferably manual)

I think it needs to have been desirable in the past for it to become classic today?

That's not to say I would not enjoy going to a show with all those present, but might cringe at a few of them.
I see where you're coming from, but I think we're on the cusp of these late 80's / early 90's old cars coming into classic status - certainly "officially".

I've bitten your bait on the E30 comment as I own a 318i Lux Manual, which didn't quite make it into your classic category! You've discounted the 318IS which was built in limited numbers and is definitely way more desirable than a 320 6 pot. I would consider them all classic though. An E36 fits more into your idea of "old" as most recent examples were made up until around 1999, which doesn't seem that long ago.

On the whole though, I'd love to go to this show. I miss seeing such variety on the roads with unassuming everyday cars like these. I miss the idea of taking a base spec humdrum company car and de-badging it, or removing the blanking switches to retrofit optional extras.

Especially love the Cav 2.0. My Mum owned a 1.6 GL and at the time I loved it. Before that she had a brown Kadett 1.3 Berlina. Can't remember the last time I saw one of those on the road.

I love the look of this, right up my street. I was interested in cars from a very early age and knew all the models - so it is a great nostalgia trip, particularly with the range of 80s stuff, which in many cases seems to be more rare than 70s classics.
Lol! I remember testing myself in the back of the car as a kid, guessing the car by its headlights at night.

Me too! Ah, the memories. As someone else said. the smell in some of the cars is so evocative (although some remind me of being sick in the back of my dad's Ford Classic)

Wow, that first picture brought back some memories, I had a red mk3 Cavalier 2.0 CDi but in the saloon version, the memories mainly being the thrashing it would take without complaint and how if you booted it in second off a roundabout it would catch out much faster cars, that's as long as it was dry, if it was wet it was just an understeery mess...

My second to last Yugo 45 came from Edinburgh. Caught the train up and then drove it back to Surrey.

Slowly.

With a stop-off in Manchester to pick up some wheels. I think it was about 9 hours driving in total.

The white Visa 652cc is mine a PH member, I just don't have a lot to say as I have only got 2 cylinders!
But they are very sweet cylinders- I had the badass Super E with a muscled 1124 engine. My mate had the twin , which was lovely- like a 2CV I also had once but sweeter revving.

It is to easy to sneer from a 21st Century perspective at such cars but in many respects Citroen had it right and everyone else was out of step . Brilliant, loping ride. very high geared by early 80s standards and intuitive control 'satellite '.

The only car on display I loathe with a passion was the Victor 101. Simply terrible , very Hyacinth Bucket with faux posh interior (buttoned seats ISTR ?) and sick making ride (literally in my case) and an engine which thrashed and groaned but produced no discernible power .
