The R26.R is regarded by us an excellent hot hatch, compromised but extremely capable but there were a number that came into the country that were shipped back out unsold.
Shipped back out where? Japan or Australia I suppose. I think they just let demand meet supply by discounting them. They probably came out at the same time as the credit crunch so perhaps that didn't help either. I dont think they need to sell 50 in the UK as I thought only 30 were coming.
Have to agree with Nick here. The story isn’t the price, it’s the car. Focus on the former is getting a bit boring and misses the point.
Yes, it’s a lot more expensive than the mk3 Trophy R which in itself was a big hike over the r26.r. This car has been developed further, uses more expensive components and obviously when it comes to these type of vehicles, the law of diminishing returns applies.
I’m certain that Renault have had feedback from previous Trophy R owners and were confident that there is a demand for a more exotic and expensive version of the hatch.
It’s very much like what BMW did with the M3 GTS in 2010/11. That car cost double what a standard M3 did but was the ultimate expression of that car and values today reflect that.
I’m not the target market but I’m glad Renault made it and I hope that some of the developments of the R filter down to the lesser models in due course.

Don’t understand why people are so shocked by the price. The Abarth 695 biposto (I think that is the name) with the full spec (plastic windows, special box, cage etc) has/had a list price of c 75k euros from memory. So it is hardly the first expensive hatch
Edit: German description, list price 78,250 euros

£65k for a megane. fking lol
But im sure that as petrol heads we are all happy that it has been built?I love it that a manufacturer has the balls to build it, it looks like a crazy fun thing.
Lets move on from this dull cost thing and enjoy the fact that Renault continue to build mad cars for petrol heads.

The Civic is a great car no doubt. However, to address the folk saying this makes the Civic look even better. If you watch the Evo magazine youtube video, they race an previous gen Renault Megane trophy-r against the new Civic. The civic is a second or more behind it.
The trophy r has always been streets ahead and even if you are a Civic/Megane/Golf fan, you have got to be happy this car exists.
How much of this is Tyres though? The trophy r has always been streets ahead and even if you are a Civic/Megane/Golf fan, you have got to be happy this car exists.

It seems it's because people don't understand how marketing works.I wouldn't be surprised if they are still making a loss on them, even at that price.
I think the price is a sticking point as it is such a large hike up for the type of car it is.
While "fastest hot hatch" was a relevant target a while back, with the price of this being that high, surely there are sports cars, coupes etc which would be significantly quicker and as much/ more fun at a similar price to this.
If they'd made a Mégane in the mould of the old Clio V6 however, everyone would love it, regardless of how capable it actually was, or wasn't...

This was the previous version of the Civic. Do you have a test against the FK8? I'd expect the tyres to be the differentiator here. The trophy r has always been streets ahead and even if you are a Civic/Megane/Golf fan, you have got to be happy this car exists.
