How, exactly?

Given my experiences with the car, I have no idea why someone would choose one over the equivalent competition. That’s an honest, subjective opinion, which you’re more than welcome to disagree with.

Please explain why i ‘set myself up for’ a sarcastic response, and why you consider that ‘weird’-thanks. Genuinely curious.

Read your original post back and think if you could have maybe phased it better - it was after all you that stated you were flabergasted that anyone would buy one and maybe it’s just badge priority or something like that - I’m not a BMW fan boi but it came across very poorly

Unfortunately It's literally what I think. I couldn't fathom any reason why someone would choose one, in retrospect !
Other than brand 'value' to a BMW fan, (or indeed someone mentioned RWD - which I really enjoy on the right car), neither added anything to the experience of owning the model I had IMO.

Still in the dark why that's a 'weird' thing to say though, especially considering this particular model has been slagged off many times on this forum. I did not wish to offend anybody.....Are people really this precious about a negative opinion of the car they own?! I couldn't give a flying monkeys what anyone thinks about my cars! Anyway smile

I got my Alpine DAB boxes mixed up - the EZI DAB does indeed have a hidden box, but that isn't what I have fitted to my BMW. That is the EZI DAB BT, which is Bluetooth. Theres a small box on the windscreen which needs 12v power running to it and connects to the AUX in (under the armrest on my BMW). It is controlled by a wireless remote, which I have lost...
The EziDAB is just a rebranded Pure Highway device. Usually sold at a much higher price, too!

I have a Highway 600 in our Jap. import, as the head unit is quite tightly integrated into the dash and systems, so I needed something which would allow us to add DAB and Bluetooth without replacing it.

Weirdly, I’m quite taken with the little 116 we bought from the in-laws. It’s bloody slow, but then again I’ve been used to my 140 but it’s a. I’ve enough little thing to drive. I’ve fitted a full leather interior which has lifted it somewhat and is way more comfy than the standard ES seats.

It’s never let the in-laws down in 11 years. Hopefully it’ll keep the same track record for us!

It certainly scrubbed up Ok with some effort.

Apart from you.rolleyeslaugh

I mean:

"Cramped, uncomfortable, laughably impractical interior, terrible ride quality, gutless diesel engine, awful gear change".

Why did you buy it?

I've had a 58 plate 125i for three and a half years taking the mileage from 62k to 80k.

I've had both rear Abs sensors go - £53 each and DIY fitment.

Water ingress into the right hand side of the boot causing PDC unit to fail - DIY again and was able to dry it out so no cost.

Washers failed due to bunged up filter in the wash bottle - DIY again and no cost.

Seized bonnet catch - this one is ongoing, I have a new front section of cable to fit costing £25 and is DIYable as soon as I can be arsed to take the front bumper off. If that doesn't fix it I need the rear section - £25 again but looks like a right **** to get through the bulkhead.

I think that's pretty reasonable for a now 10 year old car and I have no plans to change it any time soon. No idea what I'd replace it with tbh.

They are nice. When I was at Stratstone I had a black metallic 125i M Sport Coupe for a week, a cracking wee thing. Went well, handled like a dream and one of those cars where nothing annoys you. The current but soon to die 2 Series Coupe is very similar.

Why did you buy it?
A series of unfortunate circumstances - a car came up locally which simply ticked enough boxes just as I was just about to go away.
After a 2000 round trip to Berlin and back it became clear I'd made a mistake.
Glad you find that funny...?!

ISTR Mr Sytner was quite a big fan of its more pokey brother....even when he could take his pick of bigger cars

..are sarcastic responses necessary to an subjective opinion ? What a weird forum this can be.
Maybe not but writing what you did (subjective opinion or not) was always going to get a sharp response or two don’t you think?

And before you mention it again, no I’m not a “BMW fanboy”, but I do think the older Petrol 6-pots are a great ownership proposition.

Nah, not interested in playing the wind-up game with a random person on the internet.
So good luck with that, whoever you are.

Nope, plenty of people slagging off the BMW 1 series, on this forum and elsewhere.
Quite tellingly, nobody was interested in challenging any of my *actual* criticisms of the car, just preferring to give a 'sharp' and sarcastic response as you say.
Weird.

Maybe the 6 cylinder version is a better engine - no idea - but it wouldn't have addressed most of my concerns with the car as far as I'm aware.

Take a look back at previous pages - I quoted you, replying that in 8 years of ownership I shared none of your criticisms/concerns/complaints.

Plenty of others singing their praises if you read the thread.

Can't say I've noticed this, I'm 6ft and don't feel in the least bit cramped or uncomfortable.

dan98 said:

Ditching the run flats is a massive help with the ride quality. Buying one with a proper engine fixes the other issue, although I don't think you'll find one for shed money

dan98 said:
awful gear change, poor economy, ridiculously expensive servicing.
I guess the gear change is subjective, can't say I've noticed it being especially bad.
I average 33 mpg but can get 40 being careful on a decent run. Out of a 3 litre with 270bhp. Can't complain about the economy.
Had mine serviced at an indy and the cost wasn't noticeably more than any other car I've owned.

While headroom wasn't a problem, the 'cockpit' felt much more claustrophobic than comparable hatchbacks, while the back seats and boot turned out to be comically useless for the passengers and their stuff, despite the car being unusually long and less practical to park than a Golf. We were all happy to get out on arrival.

Yes I heard about the run-flats causing ride problems - I guess at the time I didn't have the appetite / budget to replace all the tyres in the hope that it improved things.
Re. the engine, I was very surprised how gutless it was, considering my previous diesel car had supposedly similar power. (VAG TDI130). It required much more changing-down on acceleration due to lack of low end torque.
In addition the economy was surprisingly poor, 42-43, whereas I'd never get less than 52 previously.

Sure the gear change is subjective - to me it seemed relatively clunky, heavy and fussy compared to pretty much anything else I've used.
I can't blame the car for servicing costs.

Perhaps with a better engine / gearbox / suspension configuration it may've been a better proposition...

Funny how opinions change.

These were almost universally slated at the time of launch for being cramped, cheaply made, badly equipped in many cases, and not fit to wear the badge.
