On the slate please Dave, natch.

Seems almost a shame it's worth so little. Would love to run it for a year or two or until too uneconomical to get through an MOT and then take it banger racing for a final send off biggrin

More style in it's rear wing than in a complete Merc of the same era.
The door handles are awful, though.
What a shed! Lovely for the money.

Yeah those Mercs have no style!!
No they don't. Thanks for confirming what dandare said smile .

Your mates XJR, in red. Did he buy it from Reading area? I sold my XJR about 10 years ago , the only red one I'd ever seen, to a guy who said he wanted a red one to set up as a performance car type project.

I'm wondering if his is my old one?

Check my profile picture to see what mine used to look like. I've never changed that profile pic since I signed up. smile

Some people do chat a lot of bks on these posts, most likely people that have never driven one, let alone owned one.

I have had over 20 in both X300 and X308 guise, and I think they are fabulous machines.

Yes, ones at low prices generally suffer from: rotten arches, corrosion to under body, lacquer peel on bonnet, boot, roof and other panels, blowing exhausts, clonking suspension, sagging head lining, etc. They have way less room inside than what they appear to have from the outside.

But, now and then, there are gems out there. My current one is a '95 X300 4.0 Sovereign, one family owned, stacks of history, no rot and it even has the original bill of sale for £44k. I genuinely never knew they were so much when new, which is equivalent to £75k in today's money!

Nothing wafts quite like an old XJ that is running right. The AJ16 engines are bullet-proof, and if looked after, seldom go wrong. They aren't particularly expensive to run (in comparison, my Bentley Eight costs a fortune in spares, even for minor things).

They do have good road manners, but of course, are no Lotus Elise.

For me, I love the low, wide and long stance. I love their image and how they used to represent the Jaguar brand.

When you think of an old Jag, these (and Series 1, 2, 3, XJ40 and X308) are generally what come to mind.

And I do believe these will appreciate in the future - once people realise they have simple mechanicals and are great old luxury barges. Grab one whilst you can!

In all, a great SOTW, although I think darker colours suit the fluted X300 design better...

Would love an XJ12 version of this. Had all iterations apart from the 12.

Oh, the turbine-like torque!

My Dad has an XJ8 (or rather is just passing it on to my brother). It's generally been reliable but at 85 years old he has trouble getting in and out. My brother has owned a MK10, XJ12, XJSV12, X350 and the current model.

I have noticed on borrowing the X308 just how relaxing to drive it is, especially in heavy traffic. I get the impression my productivity on the XJ days to be better due to the chilled nature of arrival.

While I've always liked it I'm sure the roads around me wouldn't be kind. 4 broken wheels in one year on the MG and suspension parts count as consumables don't they?

Maybe the V8 fuel consumption is worth it after all? Drive it as a Jag should be driven and high 20's is fairly normal.

Yes everything English is awful. We will be left only eating Spam and watching Roy Chubby Brown. Porsches and Ferraris and foreign food will be banned from England, as were Handel, Van Gogh and Monet some centuries ago.

Bizarre mentality not least because they're great cars except the colour, although I had one in this metallic beige

Defo not, it started life as a previous series model in green and was a race car . He grafted later front and rear outer panels on and changed pedal box , wheels and brakes , changed springs and added front splitter and rear pedestal spoiler . It has had some lightening done and some exhaust mods but is a virtually standard n/a engine .
He is putting together a 4.7L 6pot race engine with supercharger. The drawback is lack of suitable cams as nobody has developed high lift cams to be available at reasonable expense .
He also has a race Holden commodore and plans for a 2cv bodied caterham chassis with a 5ltr rover v8 .

I had a couple of series 3 V12's. They had 3 forward gears but i never really figured out what 1st and 3rd were supposed to be for, you either leave it in D for wafting or put it in 2nd and it was nice and lively anywhere in the 20-100mph range !

I had a 1998 3.2 Sport in 2012. I even did a wedding in it for a work colleage. Bloody loved the thing, it was full of technology (for it's age), the seats were unbelievably comfy, the sound system was high quality and it just had a certain presence on the road. Bang for buck this is the best valued car I've owned. Cost me £1200 at the time and I sold it for £1150 a year later. It did like a drink but when you factor in the depreciation of a new Fiesta I can guarantee it cost me less.

I love the X300, I've owned a couple previously plus a quite a few XJ40's. The 300/308 was the last of the great old school Jag's I think, that long and low shape belongs to another era now sadly. The modern Jag's are nice cars but these are something to be nostalgic about for me.

This example looks tidy but that colour is a big no no for me.

I had an XJR, nothing but trouble and ended up in the bin, I spent more time crawling under it than driving it. But when it all worked properly it was a really lovely motor, great car memories...

I like to think that somehow it's the same Jag loving Tina Turner fan they came via, if both bought in the same area not to downplay the brilliant coincidence

The styling is sublime. Wish there was more of it instead of the aggressive and lines/creases all over the place design we generally get now.

What have you done with it? I'm just wondering how much fuel has to go in such that a Jag feels overfed?
