The 1.9 309 Gti wouldn't have been any cheaper to insure than the 205 1.9 Gti !! As both have same size engine. So I can't really understand that one..
The 205 had more accidents. I had one of them. An absolutely archetypal example. I over cooked it on a roundabout, understeered, lifted off, and bingo, death dealing snap lift off oversteer, route 1 to the trees in the middle of said roundabout laugh.

The motoring journos loved them despite the looks

Now that's a trip down memory lane for me!

That's identical to my 'first' car... E21HSN, a red 3 door 309XS bought under questionable circumstances from a guy at Perth car auctions way back in 1998 for £500. A friend of a friend had a silver one and as far as I, a 17yr old clutching a fresh license, was concerned it was just brilliant and so I ended up with my red one. I went down the GTi look-a-like route - 15" Speedlines, the extra front lights, fitted a Volvo 440 rear spoiler, smoothed the front and rear grilles and remember being amazed by how quick it was. Not quick enough it transpired and so a 1.9 conversion followed (which to be honest, didn't make a massive difference) and then latterly by an ill fated Mi16 conversion which was riddled with issues and so I lost heart, abandoned the car to a mate's mechanic dad and bought a Cavalier GSi instead. 21 years ago... crazy.

I had one, briefly.

The power steering hose running across the top of the bulkhead burst, spraying fluid over the hot exhaust manifold.

Yes, the 205 1.9s looks attracted the younger more inexperienced drivers generally.
When I had my 309 Gti it seemed to be older people driving them. The 309 didn't have the same cachet at the time
