RE: Porsche Boxster (987) | PH Used Buying Guide
Discussion
A 987.2 S has 265ft lbs - that's hardly lacking in torque.
I had one, bought on Xmas Eve for £17.5k on less than 60k miles. Swapped it for an E92 M3 after a year and have regretted it since. Nor have I been able to find an equivalent one for anywhere near that price.
My only real criticism of it was that it was almost too good. It rarely broke sweat on the road.

I owned a 2007 Boxster 3.4S for just over 4 years. It was my first Porsche and loved every minute of it. Car was cobalt blue on 19s with a blue hood, black leather interior. Had the six speed manual and was fully loaded with Sports Chrono, heated sports seats, switchable sports exhaust, Sat Nav, multi function wheel illuminated door sills :-) Sold her at Christmas with 35k on the clock for £10k. Traded up for a 981.
The buying guide is a good overview and provides a level of insight to the issues that MAY arise. I bought mine privately and it was used as a daily. I suffered NO issues at all other than wear and tear. Most expensive item was new pads/discs etc all round (£1200). If the car is well looked after it will look after you.
A friend had one and the roof drain got blocked with a small stone when he was washing it. Water pooled behind the seats and blew and ECU. Resulting bill was £700 labour to replace the drain which is a 40p part and a new ECU at £550.
Car is good for long journeys and the front/back boots are very spacious, more than enough room for luggage for a week away for 2 people.
Would recommend owning one, great fun and relatively cheap to run, especially with the two year service intervals. As for the 981 - what a beast. Looks the part and drives superbly.

I had both a 986 S then a 987 S both are fantastic cars. The 986 is a generally less soft car which coupled with the superior leg room (with a GT3 centre console) meant it was my preference.
Both cars were great fun and the inherent handling balance could be enjoyed at way below the speed limit, in fact on almost any favourite country road.
Talking of taller drivers if anyone does by a 987 and wants to buy a 2" steering wheel boss extender I may know where on is for sale.

Had a 987.2 Spyder. Amazing car. Sold it after 2 years, Nurburgring ring trip and 9 k miles. Had kids, bought a b8 rs4 which was rubbish for any sort of engagement.
Now back using a 2.9 gen 2 boxster base model I found with 7k miles for 20k. On 12k now and engine has opened up nicely.
It’s 80pc of the Spyder for less than 50 pc of the cost. Plus I can mod it. Full set of ohlins, m&m manifolds & exhaust tune and a set of apex wheels will finish it off nicely.
Perfect fast road daily. Not too quick so you can hear all of that engine more of the time.

The article states:
"Google 'common 987 problems' and you will certainly find the phrase 'cylinder bore scoring'. Again, the reality is less worrisome than you might think. Marque experts believe that this was an issue for maybe one in 20 pre-DFI engine cars, and mainly on the 3.4 S 'Cayman' motors at that."
That it's the Cayman 3.4 that "mainly" suffers from bore scoring is remarkable, given the boxster and Cayman share the engine (and everything else).
Smells like ste to me. Does the author have any sources for this statement?

Did that one think it was a Cayenne? I’ve been giving serious thought to getting one of these ever since having a drive of a 718 S recently, ok I know performance wise the 718 is a good bit faster but just loved how the car felt to drive.
Would £10/11k get a decent S?.

Coming up to 6 1/2 years ownership. It's had a steering rack and new front springs in that time, and the rods went on the roof (£100 fix), but otherwise, just regular maintenance. Admittedly, it's only done 11,000 miles in my ownership, so the bills might be bigger if it was an everyday car.
Without splashing a lot more cash, I can't see anything out there worth replacing it with. It's a keeper.
Re the comment above about all the buttons. I've replaced the PCM with a CarPlay head-unit. It's surprising how much that has freshened it up.
Quite similar for me, but I’ve had mine for 9 years and almost 20,000 miles. The water pump gave way and a front spring corroded (apparently common on these). Other than that it’s just been general maintenance.Without splashing a lot more cash, I can't see anything out there worth replacing it with. It's a keeper.

The car is 15 years old now, so always the chance of a big bill, but I can’t see myself ever selling. I recently drove a £75k 718 GTS. I could live with the lack of engine noise, but I’d struggle with the steering and I couldn’t get away from the fact it would cost 8 times what mine is worth.
I agree that a CarPlay unit really freshens up the feel of the car. It’s miles ahead of the PCM in usability and cleans up the interior of quite a few buttons. I normally hate aftermarket stuff, but this is a must change and is easily reversible anyway.

I've looked at both the new Mustang and F10 M5's which are vastly different cars but I'm at a loss. Highly recommend scratching the Boxster itch if you have one but be warned, they get under your skin!
I think an M6 cabriolet is the only answer for you! Convertible kicks of the Boxster, big sports V8 cruiser like the mustang, and obviously has the BMW 'M' sprinkling on top to finish. I think an SLK55 or SL63 would be a good option, but the air-vents and nav are off centre to the rest of the centre console which I find really off putting.
