Why?
BMW is free to go and make a performance electric car, but what's wrong with M cars remaining petrol?
An all electric M car with independent motors on each wheel would be an absolute monster. It’d be better vs a petrol version on just about every metric except top speed. The characteristics of a drivetrain like that are far more interesting than what you get just adding more and more power. Looking forward to a manufacturer actually embracing this.BMW is free to go and make a performance electric car, but what's wrong with M cars remaining petrol?
Anyone saying an electric M3 would be better in almost every metric, doesnt understand the absolute joy of driving a well pedalled engaging car with a three pedals, a well balanced chassis, and an entertaining engine.
An "M3 pure" sounds like a great idea, it isnt all about speed. A quick car that is a joy to interact with is what is most appealing to me. a 991 gt3 with a manual is my ideal car, plenty cars out there faster but that doesnt appeal.
A talented driver (think top level in British GT / BTCC / WEC) in a manual E46 M3 will lap a track quicker than 90% of the ownership of this new M3, its the driver that makes most of the difference. So why not enjoy the car at the time rather than going for all the aids to make the car quicker. especially turning it all electric!

Traction control you can't disable, 'sports' cars in automatic, FWD m-sport and 4wd M'cars.
It feels we're well on the way towards driver less cars now. The thin end of the wedge is getting thicker 'Ultimate Driving Machines' are becoming only a distant memory.
Meh, people have been saying that for many years. Maybe we should bring back to manual starter, maybe the manual-choke carburettor too.It feels we're well on the way towards driver less cars now. Ross, have you ever actually enjoyed driving a car? Or do you get most enjoyment from the touchscreen and the spec sheet?

But just because someone doesn't want to use a manual box, for example, it doesn't mean that they can't enjoy driving.

Que loads of people saying they will take a RWD manual even though they don’t have enough money to buy one and never will!
I don't think someone needs to have £60k knocking around to have a preference between auto and manual or RWD and 4WD. I'd figured that one out by the age of 25 having owned only four road cars and driven only about 10-15 in total. By that time I had, like most car enthusiasts keen to experience as much as possible, tried cars with FWD, RWD and 4WD and both manual and auto boxes. All these years later my opinions haven't really changed, despite driving a lot more cars, including ones much faster than an M3 and worth more. £60k vs £20k really just means more power, more refinement and more gadgets; the basics of driving remain the same.yonex said:

That doesn't answer my question though. Also, I'm not saying BMW shouldn't make an electric performance car.
I'm not claiming electric BMW would be bad/slow/whatever/etc but for some people, myself included, it's not all about the speed. I would miss the sound of the engine dearly. This is why I would prefer an M5 to a Tesla, despite P100D being faster.
I do think that in this all electric utopia that politicians want to sell to us, there will still be a place for a petrol powered performance cars.
It won’t be utopia for EV for long. The powers that be will start taxing them heavily and without doubt they’ll all be limited performance wise. One that politicians and idealists don't want to have because it somewhat ruins their parade...

No one, absolutely no one 'buys' these cars, they're all rented out and returned we'll fked after 3 years. Available to everyone nowadays..
This is perhaps the saddest element of motoring these days.People don't own these cars so they don't take care of them. This just adds to the disposable goods culture we're seeing everywhere. Shame people who champion for eco solutions and recycling don't see how much waste is created by this.

That being said the last 550hp (ish) supercharged v8 8-speed auto I drove did disappoint me. When someone pulls out of the fast lane and you appropriately respond by denting the floor pan there seems an endless delay of various half selected gears before any torque actually gets to the rear wheels. You dare not plant the throttle early in anticipation as you can never be quite sure if you'll get a more immediate response and end up in the passenger seat of the car in front.
I'm 100% certain I enjoyed the response of my less potent 500hp E39 M5 (manual) more in the same scenario and to be honest probably preferred the E34 3.8's response even more than that. That thing really was immediate between the throttle pedal and the shove in the back. Endlessly satisfying and very much more usable in a bend!
