RE: Porsche 911 GT3 RS (997.2) | Rise
Discussion
Good vid!
I had a 7.1 and 7.2 RS, (both bought new) at the same time for a number of years. The 7.2 was undoubtedly the superior car, especially in the wet. When the 991RS came out I had a deilmma as to which car to sell to make room. Although it was a better car I let it go- too much emotional attachment to the earlier car which was the first RS I had managed to get my hands on. I still have it.

Thoroughly enjoyed that. Great video. I keep getting that I really want one feeling. Do you get the 3.8 or go for the much more expensive 4 litre. If you buy the 4 litre would I then be worried about using it and hurting its value. One question for those that know. Can you get a big guy in the passenger bucket seat. 6'4" 25 stone. Not fat just a big guy. His dream is a lap of Spa and at some point I want to make that happen for him.
I’d hazard a guess that if you can afford it you go for the 4.0 as the ultimate version. isaldiri said:
If it's a mainly question of value for money, the 3.8rs makes a lot more sense. The 4.0 is better but nowhere near by the multiple of it's price. If one is comfortable with paying for that XXX/600 plaque then it is collectible but you really wouldn't be able to justify paying the extra just for the driving/engineering differences.
Agree with that. They are all good cars, but I would never pay some of the silly money people are prepared to shell out for them.
They often get crazy money for a while and then ease back ( look at the 991RS for example). In terms of value for money compared to the GT3 I do not disagree that the performance increment does not justify the cost uplift, even at list. I think it becomes a matter of subjective taste. I have always felt that they just seemed a little more special. Mine have all be tracked and have had miles put on them - but obviously if I had chosen to speculate I could have flipped them I suppose.
At the inflated prices today there are better cars available.

I’d hazard a guess that if you can afford it you go for the 4.0 as the ultimate version. I’d spend the extra money on another car, but if it did not curtail my car buying I would probably get the best available (and still drive it)
Edit: or maybe just a plain 991 2 RS vs one with the MR mods

Don’t get me wrong, I fully agree - but if 200k here or there were not all that material to me, then paying for the extra 5 percent of specialness is probably worth it. Maybe it is like a 918 vs a 918 Weissach pack

but if 200k wasn't material to you, unless you were a collector, you wouldn't be buying a 4.0 (or any other water cooled 911) anyway but something a bit more exotic! ;-)I’d spend the extra money on another car, but if it did not curtail my car buying I would probably get the best available (and still drive it)

Edit: and i’d definitely be a collector, just not in the sense that i would collect with a view towards mundane things such as depreciation/appreciation. My RS Clio as an example will always have a place as will the FF and both of those lose money and cost in maintenance hand over fist (in relative terms)

My 997.2 GT3 RS is for sale at an OPC, 991.2 RS just landed so it needs to go I’m afraid... Message me if anyone is interested
Keep both? I’m glad that’s what I did and the 991.2RS is now sold, there will be something sharper faster and “better” along in a minute anyway. Not the case for the 997.2RS. In the end, the only thing the 997 gives up to the 991 is pace. Everything else is better in the 997 imho. YMMV obviously.
My main takeaway from this is that Porsche should do purely hydraulic steering for the next GT3 RS, even if is an overly priced option.
If Mclaren can stick with non EPAS on cars costing more, Porsche can. It is not a matter of power sapping, it was always just an excuse for the bean counters as EPAS is cheaper..
Somebody needs to tell old Preuninger that EPAS and too long a gearing is never going to be raved over. Considering the rest is so good it makes you wonder why Porsche still do that.

Good summary of the 997.2 GT3RS. When asked what it’s like to drive, I used to summarise it by saying you had to ‘sing for your supper’ driving this car. It’s pretty raw (not as raw as 996GT3RS) and could literally give you a headache when driving down to the Alps. The 991GT3RS is much more refined and GT’esque in nature, but you loose some of the rawness and interaction of the 997.2. Always felt that the 997.2 could do with an extra 50hp and you do need to work the close ratio box to get the most out of the mezger engine, which is mega and probably one of the best engines of any car. Get the car on circuit and it’s nature changed, perfectly balanced and tons of grip and hunkers down and trail braking helped to pin down the front end. In that respect, you had to get in the groove to drive this car well, otherwise it could frustrate you.
Good analysis JP, she can beat you up a bit this one, but the rewards are amazing - the sound, grip, steering feel, chassis poise and outright pace - all present in spades. Coming from the vanilla 997.2 GT3 before it, it feels like everything is ramped up a few notches - particularly the shorter gearing and wider track which are definitely noticeable over the standard car. Anyway, early days but I’m enjoying getting to know your old steed

Bizarrely-bhy comment, mate. To me, bloke's voice is cheerful, clear, pleasant and, in terms of accent, quite neutral. Not an issue, frankly.Voice, presentation, appearance matters unfortunately.
