Rolls-Royce unveils one-of-fifty Ghost Zenith

Manufacturer sees its flagship into the history books with lavish 'apex' model

Much like a school leaver's speech or a hurriedly-written cover letter, you know any press release which begins with the dictionary definition of a word is going to be tenuous in its convictions at best. This holds true even for marques as prestigious as Rolls-Royce which, in introducing its new, run-out, limited-edition Ghost, tells us that the Oxford English Dictionary defines Zenith as, "the highest or most successful point of anything." And it's all downhill from there...

The current Ghost is soon to be replaced, having been around for the best part of a decade, and the Zenith - in much the same way as the Phantom Zenith before it - sends it on its way in its most opulent guise yet. Only 50 examples will be produced, each featuring "the highest levels of Bespoke ever seen" in a Ghost and offering "a chance for collectors of luxury to obtain an item that is truly at its apex".

That means luxuries like illuminated door pockets, a marquetry insert made from wood or 'technical fibre', embroidered leather seats, and a centre console engraved with 1/50th of an artwork which depicts the original 200EX concept's blueprint in enlarged, abstract form. All immaculately crafted we're sure, but it's not exactly soul-stirring stuff, is it?

There are a couple of touches more worthy of shouting about, even if neither goes any further towards enhancing the car's physical performance than a glowing door bin. First is the 'commemorative ingot', an engraved plaque cast from the melted-down Spirit of Ecstacy which once adorned that 200EX Geneva show car. It's not every day you can claim to have a piece of a Rolls-Royce concept car, after all.

Second comes the Zenith's take on Rolls-Royce's famous starlight headliner. Seen here in 'Shooting Star' configuration, it consists of over 1,340 individually mapped and hand-woven fibre-optic lights, capable of displaying shooting stars flying at random across the perfectly crafted heavens. It's pointless, it's fantastic, and we want it. To complete the package, the 50 Zenith Collection Ghosts will be available with a special two-tone, gloss-contrast paint finish. Buyers can choose between Iguazu Blue with Andalusian White, Premiere Silver with Arctic White or Bohemian Red with Black Diamond.

So that's it, the last examples of the first generation Ghost. All sarcasm aside, the Ghost has been a highly significant car for the British brand, going further than any of its previous models towards offering an experience as compelling for drivers as it is for passengers. It remains to this day, the most successful Rolls-Royce ever sold, and the company attributes it with attracting a new, younger clientele, one which has helped to reduce the average of its owners to just 43 - presumably from somewhere north of 75...

It seems a bit of a shame, then, not to send it off in greater style. Perhaps with a little more power, a touch more dynamic ability or little less heft; y'know, the things which would actually highlight its unique capabilities. Then again, the dictionary defines frivolous as "carefree and superficial, not having any serious purpose". Expect the arrival of the next generation Rolls-Royce Ghost to carry a little more weight.

I'd rather have a launch edition of the new model than a run out version of the oldie

But then I'm not in the RR demographic and if I were would let you all eat cake and do it properly with a Phantom

Does this mean my Discovery is a zenith because my door pockets light up and I have a recycled water bottle in them. I can see real stars through the sunroof because don't haves street lights in Devon and I have a two tone bonnet thanks to the seagulls.;-)

They can't shift Ghosts and Wraiths for love or money. The dealer contribution on black badge models is £60k before you start haggling. Lovely cars but long overdue for a replacement. Also Ghost Zenith sounds like a pornstar.

You have to admire the quality of workmanship they put into their cars (as does Bentley) & whilst it isn’t necessarily to everyone’s tastes (especially given what they cost), it much be a very nice way to travel.

This is inspired. Back when I used to design Council care establishments, we used to put 'sensory rooms' in buildings intended for children with learning difficulties and behavioural problems.

Moving lights, colours and sounds to engage their brains and calm them down, basically.

Sounds like Rolls Royce have latched onto the idea for their customers, which is ideal, given how many of them will be dysfunctional and self-obsessed overgrown toddlers.

the led lights in the ceiling are tacky yes, however, and mark my words here, turning the headliner into a giant high resolution display that shows the sky above you, sans clouds, passing aircraft and other light pollution, that will be a thing.

1) The article refers to this as the flagship, the Ghost is in fact the absolute bottom of the range.

2) I have driven one of these and travelled in the back of another. It’s brilliant, particularly in regard to material quality.

3) I hope they made a new Flying Lady for the 200EX. Old concept cars need to be preserved.

4) Let’s hope the styling improves from the already high standards , unlike the Phantom where the new Mk8 looks less important than the Mk7.

5) From the press release: “the highest levels of Bespoke ever seen" . That is quite bad useage of an adjectival noun, and Rolls Royce should be careful not to destroy their credibility through abysmal use of English.

The Ghost has been consistently the best seller. In fact it’s selling better than expected at this point in its life. So not certain where you have that information from.

A 'flagship' product is not necessarily the top of the range, contrary to popular belief. It is the product that defines the brand, the main product and/or the biggest moneyspinner. The Ghost is RR's biggest selling model, perhaps that is what they consider their flagship.

The thing is, they are catering for their target market, which pretty much isn't uk buyers these days. Mostly they are selling to people who live near deserts nowadays. No tinsel is too tacky.

Autocar listed the Ghost in their worst selling list. Something like 70 sold in the Uk last year

It may well be, in the UK. But the UK only accounts for 10% of its sales.

As you have already alluded to that list was specifically just for UK sales in 2018 and not for overall global sales. Fortunately for the manufacturers there are plenty of places in the world other than the UK that buy cars and often in greater numbers.

I've seen more questionable looking luxury and sports cars in the UK than in the UAE. And I'm only counting cars on British plates

Luckily Rolls Royce have never been blighted by this type of parochial thinking. Right from the start Rolls Royce exported all over the world. It's no accident that the best/most interesting early RR are scattered all over Europe, the Middle East, North Africa, the Indian Subcontinent, Australia and the USA.

Unless you are in your sixties you haven't lived in a time where the rest of the world wasn't more important to Rolls Royce than the UK.

Having been in a current model Discovery and a Ghost (as well as a previous generation Phantom) I can tell you your Discovery most certainly is not hehe

Indeed, Isnt water considered to be recycled if its been used, treated and fed back into the water supply without first evaporating and falling as rain ?

I did hear something that water in London has been through several sets of other peoples kidneys before you get it potentially, not sure how true it is but it sort of makes sense.
