Shipped my car to America, drove it around, shipped it back

Great read, OP. That's really a dream trip.
Something like that has got to be more memorable if you have done it in your own car - in the future you can see a direct connection with it when you look out the window or when you're driving to work. I think I'd rather do it in my own Citroen C1 (I don't actually own a C1, it's an example) than a rented Mustang.
One thing - remotes in plastic bags? Antibacterial wipe down of car interior because a donkey has licked it? You'll end up more ill because you'll have no immune system if you carry on like that!
Completely agree. There is something very special about it being your own car. Turns it from a 'holiday' into an expedition/adventure. Nice having something so familiar with you in a different part of the world too.Something like that has got to be more memorable if you have done it in your own car - in the future you can see a direct connection with it when you look out the window or when you're driving to work. The antibac and bags are down to the American I'm afraid. There is no changing her. But luckily I love her all the more for it.

Isn’t schmee doing this at the moment - I saw a video where he was getting grief off the police because they didn’t understand the plates.
Any trouble with the law whilst you were out there OP?
Cracking trip btw. Fantastic thing to do.
so perhaps the chap you mention was just unlucky, or wanted some interesting youtube footage.Any trouble with the law whilst you were out there OP?

I may have missed it, but I can't see what the shipping charges amounted to.
Think the costs were over £3K in total. I think I would take the opportunity to rent something and try something new rather than do this. Although I quite like the idea of shipping my Californian e-type back to there for a long road trip back to its home. Tyre Smoke said:
This has seriously whetted my appetite to do something similar.
Off to so some research and planning.
Geeman237 expect some PMs

No problem.
Here are a few threads I have posted on re Charleston, the SC area with some suggestions on things to do, including car related.

As for shipping costs, in 2017 I shipped a TVR Griffith from Southampton to Charleston in a 20ft container for about 2,400GBP landed and unloaded. I have a broker I have used three times to do the Customs clearance and it was less than 150GBP for his services. I live 20 mins drive from the port.
Forgot to mention. British Airways started a Heathrow to Charleston direct service this year. Only April to Oct this year, flights on a Thur and Sun.

Without wishing to veer off topic too much (great thread BTW, Aircooled_Bug, I'm really enjoying it), was this a permanent export? I'm considering importing a car from the UK and am curious about how much of a ball ache it is in terms of paperwork and making sure everything is road legalTallow said:
