Must admit that I really like this, despite my natural reaction to this type of uber wagon is to question their relevance or ability to performance any role as well as it could:

Too big and heavy to be genuinely engaging as a sports saloon/wagon

Too still and sports focussed to be the ultimate in continent crushing transport

No tow bar capability, so not able to be the ultimate in track day / race toy tow car

Too capable to be deployed to any useful degree on the public road ..... the world is too small and over regulated with cameras

I'm guessing that anyone who buys one of these will also have a stable of toys to go with it, so isn't buying it to perform as a swiss army knife that can be used for all situations and conditions. The savage running costs will be insignificant in their world of expenditure
Henry Catchpole on Carfection's video confirmed that both the air and sports suspension options have the ability to tow.

The previous model was pretty much my favourite all round performance/family/dog car, and this new one looks to be excellent too. Much want from me! smokin

I had a C7 and think this is a great evolution. As others have said, the grey / chrome trim on the rear ruins it but once you get the black pack it should look great.

Timing should work well for the face lift version when it comes time to change my M5.

Q&A with Francesco D’Amore, RS6 Avant exterior designer

Is it a challenge styling a high-performance estate?

“The [old] RS6 is a hero for us and we had to think about how to top it. It’s changed a lot from the standard A6. This is Darth Vader. It’s the autobahn killer.”

Where did the design inspiration come from?

“We looked at the old RS cars and wanted to go in a clear, clean direction. Audi cars are always simple and superprecise. The motorsport guys always say ‘we reduce, we don’t add’, so we just applied that here. From some angles, it looks like a DTM touring car.”

The silver strip across the rear bumper is quite unbelievable. How did they arrive at that? Nothing like that features anywhere else on the car.

I'm probably in the minority but I like the looks more than the current model, I'd probably go for an Ivory colour on the seats.

I just hope it’s got real exhausts!
most likely, as usual, some ugly squashed metal pipes hiding deep inside those plastic oval showpieces.
Like AMG does as well.

I miss my C7 RS6 and this looks fantastic. DRC pack is a must as it handled so much better than the standard air suspension model I had before it. I suspect this will be similar.

Rear sports diff was standard on the C7 so I hope they haven't rolled back some previously standard options? Would be a shame as the M5 needs very little in the way of options.

Absolutely love this!!

Admittedly when I first clapped eyes on those over edited photos I thought that rear bumper looked a bit poor, but that video posted up there somewhere with the walk around show it much better. The angles on that video show that this RS6 is exactly how it should look, a brutal family bus!

As has been pointed out too, you will be able to spec the black pack or Audi Sport pack that delete the extra colour in the bumpers like other RS models.

off to buy a lotto ticket/pray/beg a lot/cross more fingers........

I don't like it at all visually. Triangles everywhere. Really weird, unrefined flat chunks. Massive gopping wooden exhaust mustache. Hate that shape that dominates the dash too. A full length frame to surround... another bit of trim.

I noticed that.

From experience, the RS6 can get very expensive when you add options and I imagine adding the rear diff and rear wheel steering - even bundled as a 'pack' - will mean this is a easily north of £100,000 if you opt for the ceramics.

When i had a C7 Performance, I managed to get a £14,000 discount using CarWow, but imagine the same won't come easily until these are a couple of years old. That's difficult to swallow when you can get significant discounts on the alternative BMW and Mercs.

I would say though that the C7 RS6 was genuinely the absolute best car I've ever had in terms of ticking just about every box possible. It went like stink, was fun to drive despite its size, had all the toys, and received more comments than you'd imagine a black estate car ever could. Despite having 600bhp, I easily got over 30mpg too thanks to the cylinder deactivation. It was truly a wonderful car. If the C8 achieves the same, it'll be a winner.
