I had a Passat with that engine, my Dad bought it new in 2001, I had it from 2005 to about 2009 and then he had it back. Was still going strong until he part-ex'd it a few months ago for less than the cost of pair of new tyres.

I had no idea the engine was fragile, in 18 years all it needed was an Alternator.

Was neither fast for a V6, or economical for a Diesel, but it was very smooth to drive.

When the 1.9 pd is so good and can easily be remapped it makes the V6 pointless. The first big bill and it's off to the weigh bridge.

I still have my 1.9 pd manual with 196k on it as a daily driver, routine maintenance only for the last 9 years. I know for a fact newer ones are not as reliable.
It is just such a useful tool- just the right size, well made, goes well enough and economical, and still looks great.
Of course its age is catching up with it now. Not sure id touch the Shed though, with its toffee 2.5tdi engine and liquorice slushbox.

My 2002 1.9 TDi Avant was probably the best car I ever owned.

I want my car to do stop, start, be comfortable, be economical to run and repair and take a beating and the B6 excels in all these areas. Mine had 220,000+ miles on it and the interior was still squeak free.

Sorely missed.

Several friends owned this shape of A4 years back. Being a passenger in one is a neutral experience, they do not warm your knackers one jot. I had a 156 V6 at the time, I still miss it. I bet not many say that about an A4.
I miss mine. I had the saloon 3.0 V6 Quattro Sport with a manual box. It was just enough of everything to make it a great car. My brother has it now but due to the lack of space he's selling it for something bigger and I'm tempted to buy it back.

I went from that to an Alfa 159 V6 which looks better, sounds better, is more powerful and more engaging to drive but I do still have a soft spot for the Audi.

Would have been more interesting if it had been an A6...the A4s where cramped and very uninteresting....i used to deliver these many years ago and never stirred an emotion in me.

I had this model albeit 2litre D, so small inside and horrid to drive , sold it after 3 weeks and bought a bug eye Imprezza Wagon which felt twice the size inside.

Last week a wolf in sheeps clothing , this week a sheep.
I laughed - thanks

I've just sold my 2003 A4 2.5 Tdi quattro manual with 163,000 miles. It was a good example that just sailed through its MOT before sale. However, it was rubbish on fuel (no better than my BMW 530i E39) and quite slow for a 180 bhp V6 TDi. My biggest gripes were the slow spin up from the turbo from stationary, and really low gearing the quattros have.. oh and the interior quality compared my older BMW was rubbish !

After taking a good look at the latest RS6 the styling of this A4 is quite refreshing with no pointless agressiveness and bling inside out.
Maybe one day car design will go back to be simple is best, designed by the wind rather than pretend downforce.

Imagine a Vauxhall Calibra or Peugeot 406 coupe done today, it would look horrendous.

Tell us more details? Can’t be that bad...
From memory, I think it was Camshafts, Turbo's and poss Injector pump? but to add a bit of balance to my original quote, they can do really well these engines, my father ran one well over 200k (same 2.5 180BHP), its just the engine can be a hand grenade when it does go.

The B6 diesels were 1.9 or 2.5. The replacement B7 (2005 on) got the 2.0TDI though.

Makes you realise how at one time Audi's had clean smooth uncluttered lines. Now it's all vulgar big grilles, blobs of shiny bits & silly air dams & air intakes.

The change coincided with Audi becoming the new BMW.

A good few years ago I took one of these as p/ex against an 2.5 MG ZT-T that is picked up for a song.
Truly dreadful thing, felt achingly slow and the auto box had some degree of petulance (can’t temember exactly what but there was a fault code ready permenantly plugged into the OBD port, it wouldn’t get out of 2nd or similar)
Chopped that against an identical car except it was the 1.9tdi with a gentle remap.
The 1.9 felt faster, had agility where he 2.5 felt like it was wearing lead boots, was more economical, and was hewn from granite whereas the 2.5, and it’s gearbox, were made from butter.
Shows how times have changed, SWMBO has a Leon ST FR 190 petrol which in daily use is more economical than the 2.5tdi of yesteryear....

No, I'll rephrase that for you. 'You’d have to be a right c’u’nt ' to write that.

Not sure the 2.5 is the best engine in these, they have their fare share of issues and the 1.9 is very good indeed.

Great cars though, never going to set the world on fire but that is missing the point. Very well screwed together, well laid out cabin, good seats, and very refined. The sort of car that is really good to live with and gets under your skin, but no one lusts after. I like it!
