I thought Range Rover had tested and killed the whole concept of convertible SUVs with their short attempt at selling Evoque with a folding top. But today I encountered a VW T-Roc cabriolet for the first time. Bizarre thing. Will it catch on and start a new craze? Can't see it myself.

its been on sale since 2020, you've seen one and I live in a place you'd expect to see plenty and haven't seen a single one. I expect it will be quietly dropped
My wife and I just run one car between us now I have retired. If I get my way, our next car will be a T-Roc convertible. She loves SUVs, I love convertibles, so it's a great compromise. But I doubt I'll get my way. She's the main driver of the car, I go most places by bicycle, bus or tube, so she'll probably want to replace the Merc GLC with...another Merc GLC.

Don't you want a fun car for yourself?!

Why not just buy a different one?

SUV convertibles aren't exactly a new thing are they? In the 90s, we had Vitaras, Jimnys, Fronteras, Daihatsu Sportraks, Freelander 1s, Wranglers etc. I had a Jimny softop as a company car briefly and it was horrific at 40mph+ but kind of fun just pottering around with the roof off!
But, IIRC, none were full convertibles like the Evoque or T-Roc, just SUVs with a bit of tent action going on round the back (hehe)

Same principle through, right?
And let's face it, if you met daisy, would you complain about her Jeep?

I always thought I'd get a 911 when I retired, but now I'm here, I'm just not bothered. Kind of lost interest in stuff, more than happy pottering around on my bike. Or just walking or running. All the aggro that comes with a car, tax, insurance, servicing, speed cameras, finding somewhere to park, it's all just too much effort.

Well that's really sad to hear. The fun of cars is always worth the small amount of agro, surely a love of cars is why we are all here?!

To a large extent, because these are different. How ironic this is, with comments on here weekly at least about cars being too bland and similar looking. Ditto the remarks about boring electric cars. No I don't have any form of SUV but if people like them, fine.

What were vw actually thinking? It serves no purpose and it looks silly. Who would buy a convertible suv?

I agree, but for this reason I quite like it. Same goes for those convertible Range Rovers or whatever they are

Someone who likes both an elevated driving position, and a convertible?

This may come as a shock to you, but not everyone will share your view and your tastes wink

There is a couple near me which I think look OK. Their owners seemed to like it as they probably were not forced to buy one.

I reckon it serves the purpose of being a convertible and a SUV, which is more than the purpose of a SUV and more than the purpose of a convertible.

The people in question seem to have found purposes for them, stuff like going places they go to. A bit like a car basically.

Exactly this... There are currently 62 T-Roc convertibles for sale nationally on Autotrader so people are buying them! Nobody on PH questions people who say they'd like an Elise but despite being made for around 10 times as long, there are only 45 of them for sale on Autotrader... So it seems reasonable to assume that many more people want a T-Roc convertible than they do an Elise!

Something that never fails to amaze me is the amount of people unable to see beyond their own choices and tastes.

Bluemason is a perfect example of that. He or she doesn't like the car, and cannot comprehend why anyone else would.

I've always been a bit like that with diesel convertibles. The whole idea of a convertible is to hear the engine/exhaust far more(from a nice sounding petrol engine)for me, so a clattery diesel engine and its exhaust wouldn't be something that I would want to hear even more.

As you say it just boils down to different choices and tastes, and I will admit to test driving a E93 330d convertible years ago, but I didn't go through with it because the car sold while I was making my mind up about it!

I'd admit it's not to my tastes, but if I were an older person less able to get into a low slung convertible as easily as I do or of some sort of mobility limitation I could see the attraction of high rise top down fun!.
