Not sure if it's been covered in the 26 odd pages, but the answer, imo:
because they look fking ugly
Make your mind up what car you want.
A 4x4 that can't go off road
a sports car that's too tall and has the centre of gravity like an upside down pyramid
a softtop van.
does 25mpg, £300 a year to tax but can't crack 0-60 in under 9 seconds
None of that matters if enough people like them. because they look fking ugly

This is the reason so many hateful things have been popular.
Jade goody
Jedwood
corded trousers
religion
speed cameras
government
democracy ..

If somebody likes a car then that's all that matters really, what we think of it doesn't actually matter.

My Jeep 4.7 HO was bought because I wanted something that could handle snow, the odd muddy field and tow 3.5T because they look fking ugly

It will do 0-60 sub 9 seconds but obviously wasn't bought for speed
If it was convertible that would be even better and save me buying another car - currently I'm looking for an old CLK to add to my fleet
I’ve clearly made a terrible mistake branding anyone buying a car that takes its looks from a 1950’s pram ( ok I wasn’t being serious) as it’s up to the buyer to purchase whatever they fancy).
However I rest my case with the evidence below - how anyone could defend buying this as a great choice I’m not sure how!

I really like it. But perhaps I am not judgemental enough or too open minded or too aware that different people like different things? Take your pick. However I rest my case with the evidence below - how anyone could defend buying this as a great choice I’m not sure how!

High seating position / easy to get intoHowever I rest my case with the evidence below - how anyone could defend buying this as a great choice I’m not sure how!
Premium feel / cabin
Big / safe car for side impacts etc
Convertible
I don't see an issue

Not keen on that colour combo, silver does it no favours. But the car itself, massive thumbs up from me. They look great in VW's metallic blue or metallic yellow. However I rest my case with the evidence below - how anyone could defend buying this as a great choice I’m not sure how!

You really do struggle with the concept that other people's tastes, needs and desires, may differ from your own, don't you? However I rest my case with the evidence below - how anyone could defend buying this as a great choice I’m not sure how!
Do you seriously lack the self awareness to realise that you're saying "I don't like this, so I can't understand why anyone else would like it"?

As SUVs in general demonstrate.
I'm a big believer in form following function. A sports car looks nimble and fast because they are. A 4x4 looks like it can go anywhere because it can. An SUV looks like it can't do either.. because it can't.
Obviously, I differentiate between a proper 4x4 with locking diffs/low range and an SUV which is basically a jacked up FWD hatch/wagon.

My wife needed a car that was big, fast-ish, 4WD, comfortable, can seat 5 people with a decent sized boot, that can also tow 2400kg
What non-SUV should she have bought?
You're talking about form following function, but you're only thinking about functions that interest you.
Think a bit harder.

What I have said demonstrates the exact opposite. I absolutely appreciate that taste is subjective, and entirely a personal thing.
You, on the other hand, seem to consider yourself an arbiter of “taste”, since you’re claiming that anyone who likes a convertible SUV (or an SUV in general) doesn’t have taste.
As for what you are a big believer in, that matters not a jot to someone else who doesn't share your beliefs and wants something that fits their needs and desires.
The lack of self awareness and empathy on display here is depressing.

I'll need to replace my Mk2.5 Octavia vRS soon. I have similar criteria (without the towing), so I'm very interested in any answers to this riddle! My wife needed a car that was big, fast-ish, 4WD, comfortable, can seat 5 people with a decent sized boot, that can also tow 2400kg

I'm a big believer that form following function is a load of crap. I like the look of diver's watches. I don't go diving. I'd be well up for a diver's watch that looked like it was 300m water resistant, but wasn't, was therefore cheaper, and was good to wear in the shower. As SUVs in general demonstrate.
I'm a big believer in form following function.
I also love the look of those £10K turntables with a plinth that weights half a tonne. I wish I could buy one that looked like that, but was only about £500, and only weighed a couple of kg.
What's the problem with liking the look of stuff but not needing the functionality that comes with the price tag, and hence buying something that looks like it has the functionality, but doesn't? It may not be your cup of tea, but what bearing does it have on your life that it's someone else's cup of tea?

I'm a big believer that derisive comments like this on one of the biggest petrolhead communities in the UK from people who don't even have their garage tab enabled on their profile simply indicate an argumentative troll of a poster who should be completely ignored. As SUVs in general demonstrate.

You probably spend most of your time in NP&E.
