am not hesitant atall when driving, in all honesty I have been told I am an excellent driver by many people. I would out drive you any day of the week to be fair.
When I read this, Dustin Hoffman in Rainman sprung to mind smile
Any sympathy I might have had for the OP’s fears have just gone out of the window.

I can drive a car on the road relatively well though
If all you did was pass a test at 17 and you've done nothing since, I would be fairly safe in betting that you don't drive 'relatively well', you just don't know where you do it badly.

I'd argue your performance in a test X years ago doesn't impact your performance today, demonstrably poor though it may be, due to the fact you think that entry level test is the highest standard required. It could be argued with an attitude like that, that you aren't an enthusiast at all. tongue out

I haven't highlighted what I've done since passing my test.

I did say relatively well as lots of people will have different opinions on what constitutes driving well.
IAM would highlight that I drive to aggressively and quickly and take too many risks bit I'm fully aware of that and prefer driving that way than being their definition of an advanced driver.

I haven't claimed to be a great/perfect driver, I still maintain that in my opinion, if you can't pass basic tests after 3 attempts, you should probably give up trying or not be allowed to try again.
That doesn't stop people from driving but it would limit them to having a better understanding through more lessons than rushing in to multiple attempts before they're clearly ready.

If, after the OP failed the first time, he took on more instruction than he did and improved through learning for a longer period of time, there'd have been a higher chance if him passing 2nd time and then maybe being less nervous after that pass because he wouldn't be so worried about having to do it again if his licence was revoked.
