I have a bmw e46 330ci and would like to remove the catalytic convertors at the manifolds leaving just the rear two,the purpose is too increase HP.Am i able to do this? if not what can i remove and still pass an MOT ?
I would think you would be ok to do this, so long as there are cats visible and they are doing the job then it should pass, I don't know how many cats every car has but as long as I can see one and it works I would pass it.

Why would you bother? Do you regularly use all the horse power your car has?

Yes i actually do but not constantly,I am planning a lower ratio diff to improve acceleration and the manifolds are worth 20bhp.

I'm not sure if this is law, but my father in law has two MOT lanes that are used for MOTs ONLY. They have a different four post lift with shaker plates compared to the single post, or two post lifts in the other bays. The brake rollers, and emissions testing kit is on the drive up to it too. I would imagine to do MOTs it needs to be an MOT lane.

Or they won't want to do repairs on a lift that will be in use for most of the day earning them good money with MOTs.
Yes - a test lane has to be free to do tests at all times.
Can't be pulling bits off motors and disabling on the test lane.

Yes i would think so but best to look it up on realoem all the parts fitted to your car are listed via the chassis number.

Only if you test on demand. If you book tests via a booking system rather than drive up then you can use the ramp for whatever you want.

Search as I can through the linked MOT manual above, I can't find an answer to this (which I think I know the answer to):

- Loose exhaust heat shields - are these a fail or an advisory?

I appreciate I could just remove it, but I wonder whether that causes another issue!

Thanks

Good point! I forgot to write that as an option, which is what I intend to do, I was just curious.

The inspection manual has all the answers and you can even search specifics, if that's how you'll like to navigate it.

It would generate an advise. They would only fail if missing from somewhere risky like a fuel tank.

My winter beater is in need of a MOT, however, there is a fairly significant crack in the windscreen (star pattern, longest crack 15cm-ish), but it is totally outside the 'swept area' as defined in the MOT manual...

Am I correct in thinking this would technically be ok to pass despite the damage?

It’s not even the swept area which the test is concerned with. It’s area A (IIRC) of the swept area which is 290mm centered from the steering wheel and only that within the swept area.

All info on manual posted above.

Do you get excited about MOT testing any particular cars?

Have you ever damaged a car during an MOT?

Are there any MOT rules you would like to see changed?

Personally.

Excited might be too much. Its interesting to see other brands from the ones I usually see. Though I recently turned away a Lambo as I couldn't be sure we should lift it without damaging it.

Yes. Nothing major/catastrophic though. Employer covered the repair. I imagine Currys drop a fridge every now and then. When you deal with thousands of cars a year. Sometimes you get unlucky.

Not really. It's not a complex inspection really.

No, not really, we get some interesting cars to test but some are more stressful than others.

Not yet.....I had one settle back down on the ramp after the sills collapsed through corrosion once...

It seems a pretty fair system right now.
