Had a 265, tuned to 310bhp. Engine is alright, felt very similar to my 93 MR2 turbo to be honest. The gearbox is agricultural though. Much prefer the engine and box combo of my EP3.
The chassis is an absolute masterpiece however - certainly can't deny that. Had the cup pack on mine and the cornering speeds were just ridiculous, even in the wet.
French car with a st gearbox? Surely not! The chassis is an absolute masterpiece however - certainly can't deny that. Had the cup pack on mine and the cornering speeds were just ridiculous, even in the wet.
I've had two of these. First one was very almost new in 2010 and had the LSD spec which was great, I've driven EP3's since and I would say the LSD equipped FN2 does edge an EP3. I also fitted the GP pack bumpers which made it look great at the time (IMO).
I've had our second one (a 2009) for a year now, mainly grabbed it because they're such good value for money. With a Clio 182 and an Exige S in the household the FN2 gives us a bit of comfort and practicality without being a complete bore to drive. It's also a damn van with the back seats down, so gets used for all sorts of tip and furniture runs.
The ride comfort is a bit of a downside, but it's acceptable for most of its mileage (motorways) and it's also the least fuel efficient car on our driveway which is also a bit annoying!
I think if you can pick one up at £4k-ish it would be a bargain, leaps and bounds ahead of the refinement you'll see in an EP3 or RenaultSport contemporary and will still give you a few smiles along the way.
I think the aesthetics and interior have aged really well, our current 2009 one is still relatively rattle-free though the rear shocks have got a bit of a creak on when cold. All the electrics work and it just feels mechanically really tight.

I sold mine this month after 4 years of ownership. I always liked the looks of the FN2 and I added a few bits over the years to look more like the Mugen car. The factory GP kit should have been standard TBH. I sold my 60k 2007 for around £4500.
I do regret selling mine for the balance of sporty looks with absurd practicality. I've swapped for a 5.0 litre Jag XK and certainly miss the back seats and boot space!
Ultimately, it was the poor ride and lacklustre performance that made me sell it. I still looked back at it when parked up though. Even when the new owner picked it up.

Just recently bought mine. 83K £3500, 5 careful previous owners . As an everyday car it's tidy. A lot of car for the money. They have their faults, leaky boot, seized calipers, notchy 3rd gear and stupidly lowered mine due to snapped oem springs making the ride beyond harsh. Paint is poor. But that said vtec sounds awesome and when you have it screaming it's plenty quick enough. Parts are expensive from Honda so you shop around.

My friend had one . Went watching him do a track day at Elvington . I was in my 530d . Went out as a passenger in his car zzzzzzzz . My bmw 530d automatic had more character better handling . Just thought his car was a bit pants . Much prefer the older hondas
Type R’s are cars best experienced and demonstrated when you drive them yourself. They’re not that quick anymore considering 320d’s and C220d’s are nearly 200bhp but hitting VTEC in my old EP3 made me feel like I was in the fastest car in the world. Not so much if I was a passenger.
I haven’t driven the FN2 or been in one so I’m not going to say you’re mistaken but if it’s anything like my EP3 on the road then you are mistaken. I replaced my EP3 with a 430d and it took me nearly 2 months before I started to throw it around with confidence and it had zero character compared to the Type R
Bought one of these 4 months ago. I'd been after one for a while but it was hard to find one that hadn't been messed about with and I love it!
Yes there are faster cars but it's still pretty quick. Yes there are more comfortable cars but it's still pretty comfortable. I suppose there are more practical cars but it's still pretty practical. Well, you get the idea.
And compared to the opposition it's a Honda. Yes, I looked at Cupras and Gti's and so on but this will still be going long after they've all been scrapped.
For what they now cost get one that's been looked after and you will not regret it. Unless you're really that worried about 0.5 sconds to 60!

Just bought a low miles last of line Fn2 in black with xenons and LSD. Payed a nominal sum for the reliability and performance on offer. Being used to the older type r's the fn2 feels large due to the hard to judge a/b pillar visibility at parking speeds. When on a charge the car does seem to shrink though. The steering engine and drive train are great. The ride is firm but not intolerable and it handles well with the lsd. It cruises on the motorway at up to 45mpg and did 300 miles home no sweat. Under acceleration the car is rapid. Each type r I find different and mine was able to keep a modern Porsche boxster at bay under rolling acceleration, much to his agitation. The guy I bought it from took me for a test drive and on the rural roads near him I wouldn't have wanted to go any quicker. This despite my history of running a 360bhp Saph cosworth. I think as an all round car the fn2 deserves some slack, especially for the money these days. The aggressive front looks better than the rear and is modern. I never gelled with the look of the ep3 as I was offered a similarly low miles one for £2k more than the fn2 and six years older. Would ideally have an Fd2, but is it really twice the car? Its older and twice the price for double the mileage, just as firm I imagine, not much quicker point to point and £555 tax on later ones like the s2000. A mugen Fd2 or supercharged Fd2 would be nice though.
