I couldn’t afford one but have had the pleasure of a drive in a Model S and thought it was great, if I could afford to spend that much on a car I hate to say it but I’d probably pick the Tesla over an ICE equivalent.
I looked at one 3yrs ago when changing cars.

I was really impressed. It's a compelling product for a large car, and in its market has significant financial benefits. For me, the fun element was one-dimensional (warp factor speed). I'd crave a little more driving excitement....hopefully this is the challenge the Taycan brings.

It's probably not worth going into the issues of when a BEV is "right for me" or not -- as this topic has been debated endlessly in other threads. And I personally side with the "BEVs are coming and, eventually, will more or less take over a very large portion of the market" brigade.

So... This Model S has been upgraded with Plaid or Raven or whatever. A hands-on effort, I assume.

Something that is less hands-on, and almost utterly invisible... The over-the-air (OTA) update. Your car becomes better, or at least more capable, over time. Just like your phone. Not to mention the occasional availability of new profiles or settings for various use-cases (camping?) or seasons.

This will make our cars so much more valuable, so much more a part of our daily activities.

There’s probably a hundred drivers more suitable to do the lap than him. I’m not sure he’s done anything other than a few laps has he? There’d be more credibility in it if it was someone like Uwe Alzen...

Once the market is flooded by the main stream manufacturers, EVs will become the norm. I can see my V8 and W12 ice cars being wiped out by our incompetent government setting policies not everyone voted for so inevitably I will be forced to buy one. But it won’t be a Tesla as Elon Musk looks like a Bond villain.

Porsche's record-setting Taycan lap at the Nurburgring was partly intended to put Tesla's nose out of joint
really? Porsche, the german sports car company, that makes sports cars famous for their track performance, runs one of their track honed sports cars around (arguably) the most famous racing circuit, just like they have done with every car they make (including the SUVs) in order to slight Tesla??

Surely the fact that immediately it was announced that the Taycan was the fastest proddy EV around 'ring, Tesla suddenly announced it would be running their cars around there (for the first time ever) is more of a hint......

For me to go EV I would like a quoted 600 miles range or more. Then if its freezing cold and raining I would still have enough range with wipers, heaters and lights etc. on, with a diversion thrown in for good measure, and still not tickle my battery anxiety. Long while to wait I suspect!
You keep 600 mile's-worth of fuel in your car ALL THE TIME? No, me neither.

Charging points are not THAT far apart that a range of 250-300 miles is really an issue.

The Tesla Roadster 2 apparently has a 620 mile range and a 0-60 under 2 seconds. Will likely be >£100k though.

Yes, he has not done enough laps, especially as the driver would have to give good feedback since they have not been there before. Kevin Estre would be a good choice except perhaps not biggrin

If they had stuck Pirelli Trof R's on it then Marco Mapelli would be a good choice too.

From the video I've seen it certainly looks like the Taycan is a proper drivers car and I expect it will get the edge on the Model S in terms of overall driving experience, to be fair to the Model S though it isn't trying to be a sports car, it's a 4 door saloon more akin to a 5 Series or E Class etc, and I didn't think it handled badly for the type of car it was, although admittedly I didn't really throw it about much, the autopilot was pretty cool too, can understand why you were put off too, and if you do get a Taycan would be very interested to hear what it's like!.

If they want a decent lap time, they’re going to need someone who knows their way around.

Do a YouTube search for Uwe Alzen onboard.

If they want to sell a load of cars, they’ll want to put a famous mug in the car. Id be surprised if 15% of the electric car buying public knew who Stefan Bellof was, never mind Uwe Alzen.

Fun watching the little car (cobra? Ace? Walk away from the red camera car every time the camera driver loses traction out of corners.

But the Tesla body is now a quite old design and the interior seriously lacking.
As an overall package, and if you had the dollars, you’d take the Porsche surely (drive probably nicer too)

Surely only so many software updates you can have to keep people interested?

Charging time is not insignificant though. I can understand wanting more range than you would for a car that a few miles from almost anywhere is able to take on a full tank in a minute or so to offset the risk of having to wait while it charges.

Works fine for every other manufacturer to not have a ‘famous’ face in the car. I suspect most Tesla owners probably don’t know who Nico Rosberg is either...
