I cannot understand those people bhing that it's not a proper Defender.

I assume they have all registered their interest with INEOS Automotive.

No one is going to buy one who's looking for a previous Defender replacement. The question is will people buy one who were going to buy another manufacturers 4x4 ?

I was there today and I didn’t notice it receiving lots of positive attention. It just looks like a 90’s discovery with a nasty vinyl wrap and steel wheels.

Horrid. But then I wasn’t planning on buying one anyway so my opinion is worthless. They will probably sell like hot cakes and, just like every other LR model, 99% will never leave the road.

I can imagine them selling well in China, which is probably the point.

It just looks a bit rubbish. JLR have completely missed an opportunity to evolve the defender just like Mercedes did with the G wagon. RIP defender.

I can't find my copy of the book (published in 1988) but there is a picture showing concept drawings from the early 70s for a replacement for the Series 3. This is quite similar in basic shape and proportions to the new Defender.

Seems rather bizarre that they couldn’t knock off £291 quid for a starting price of £39,999....ie below the psychological £40k barrier. The exclamations if it being too expensive by the unthinking masses would be greatly reduced by that simple move.
Ah the unthinking masses foolishly believing 40 grand is a lot of money cunningly deceived by a bit of basic psychology.

I quite like it.

It was never going to be like the old defender because the old one wasn’t exactly a huge sales success before it got chopped?

They know who the market is. Quite frankly me! I understand there is going to be an EV version. I will probably buy one for the wife to run around in up here in Norfolk. The most off road it will go is up to the rugby pitch to watch our children play at boarding school. There will almost certainly be lots of them joining her. It goes well with Joules, tweed and a dog the image lots of people in the country rather like.

Most of those will also be farmers.

Isn't £40k where the extra "luxury" car tax starts?

Yeah

That extra £230 list price will add £1700 road tax over the first 5 years, and strike it off many company car lists too. Silly move.

Price it at £39999 with mats being an option you can buy over the counter.

People have slagged BMW off for adding options after the car is bought, being bought online and updated over the air, but it is a smart move.

That’s precisely the point: if it was £39,999 people would be tempted to order poverty spec with no extras to keep it under 40k and avoid the premium tax. As it’s over £40k, it’s into premium tax territory anyway so there is no incentive not to add extras.

It’s all about the upsell....

I think PHEV only - discovery is I think going full EV, although someone (a jaguar bloke at a pre-launch display of the iPace) told me Land Rover will be PHEV and jaguar full EV

The defender may be PHEV only due to weight - isn’t it 2100kg for the 90 with nothing on? That’s the same weight as my iPace which has a few hundred kg of batteries

I think it was CAR magazine that said there would be a full EV. I admit it seems unlikely but could be the best option for off roading motor at each wheel would give a huge amount of control. Obviously irrelevant to nearly all potential owners myself included. But means an EV isn’t totally useless for a defender.

Depends if it includes delivery and first year tax in the price.

Actually motor in each wheel isn't, as with no cross axle locking and centre diff each motor needs to have enough torque to move the car, should all other wheel be in the air or on something slippy. So would be massively oversized. Hence why you don't yet get electric off roaders/ATVs etc

Can't help but think that the LCV 2/3 works have been a much better replacement. Seems to be far more in keeping and functional than this Toyota FJ Cruiser/Discovery hybrid horror.

I quite like it but appreciate looks are subjective.

You can’t look cool driving a previous gen though, the driving position is so sit up and beg it just looks comical. With the window closed even more so.

Anyone know if anyone his has a more car like space/driving position? If they’ve nailed that this will be one of the most desirable cars amongst the style conscious brigade and will sell like hot cakes.
