Lexus RX400h catalyst theft
Discussion
Hi
Had the catalytic converter sawn off in broad daylight today on a Lexus RX400h. Was fine in the morning but by 3pm was gone..
Has anybody got a more cost effective repair than £1700 odd pounds just for the part from Toyota.
In particular has anyone experience of aftermarket catalytic converters. I’m not sure it’s worth claiming on insurance to get an Original one because it is the oem ones that are targeted.
Thanks

These Toyota cars got for like £400+ at the scrap yard.

I had some aftermarket cats sent over from the States when I needed some for the twin cats on my RX300, they worked fine even with the LPG conversion which is what nackered the original cats anyway.
I don’t know if it’s the same type/system but they were about 20-30% cheaper than Lexus supplied kit in about 2012

We’re the cars parked in these spots regularly?
Just wondered if they were specifically targeted or whether the thieves drove around looking for targets.
As these cars aren’t exactly common it could be a long day in the saddle.
Nope. Mine is never parked where it was. Spoke to my mechanic and it’s happening all the time.Just wondered if they were specifically targeted or whether the thieves drove around looking for targets.

OP here.
Based in London as well.
Apparently Toyota / Lexus and Honda are the ones they are after for scrap value. They extract the precious metals from them. These makes apparently have very high quality cats.
RX400h can be done without a jack it’s so high up.
No second hand ones on eBay..
Can get an aftermarket one delivered for £150 from USA but not sure it will bridge the gap that they have left by cutting it out.. It is designed to replace one that you remove and cut out a certain size section.
The original one is one piece from under the engine all the way to the back silencer.
There are cheaper non genuine UK ones for around £300.

This type of brazen theft is ridiculous. Didn’t realise the Japanese made higher quality cats I must admit. Particularly vulnerable if you drive an RX or LC then as the t leaf can just crawl under.
OP, buy the cheap one from the US and have someone weld the appropriate size pipe to the damaged bit to bridge the gap to your new cat. I would try and find a custom exhaust place, they’ll make it up for you and won’t give you the computer says no response that any chain places or mechanics buying pattern parts might.

Also have a customised plate to put an extra barrier between the scrote and the cat.
I read somewhere that the way they cut it (without giving a st, because scrote) is that it ruins the rear pipe and downpipe so if you go via your insurance they have to replace most of the system even if just the cat is missing.
The police need to come down like a ton of cats (metal or furry) on scrap dealers.
Or people need to stop buying these vehicles until manufacturers come up with a suitable solution eg having a protective plate. Or wiring the cat up to the battery and it can only be disengaged with the keys.

Unfortunately the police don’t care about this. The thieves are wearing balaclavas and have fake plates so cameras don’t help.
Spoke to a copper the other day about lads with knives around and causing problems and they said straight up that unless you’re in the process of getting stabbed they wouldn’t come down and to call 101 instead.
Tried to report my cat theft but can only do it online so I couldn’t be bothered.
Irony is that I paid for parking which pays for all the scameras etc around the area, on top of my £1000 a year for local business permit and still I get done.
Whole system is a joke. Sometimes I wonder why I play by the book.
Got a massive personal injury claim against my insurance as well from a a woman who walked into my car. The amount of lies and made up witnesses etc is a joke. However, it’s with the fraud dept and admiral will do their best not to pay out of course. Except that whether they prove fraud or not it’s still registered as a claim against me and increases my premium.
