This!
Tbh I was wondering how this is much of a GT. It does seem a bit confused. It's like a softer version of a usual Mclaren.

It feels more like the Aston Martin approach to product development, with the Vantage, DB11 and DBS all being a little bit too similiar, unlike , say Ferrari and Lamborghini.
Lamborghini only have 3 models in their line up. Before being bought by VAG, they had 1. The first expansion model was developed alongside the Audi R8 (Gallardo) and the second a development of the Cayenne, Bentayga, Q7, Touareg (Urus). Clearly both expensive and bespoke projects that started from completely clean sheets of paper.

Ferrari have a huge amount of history to fall back on in terms of product - they have been making v8s and v12s for decades. Most of their cars are improvements on older models (the F8 is an improvement over the 488. The 812 an improvement over the F12. Portofino an improvement on the California. FF an improvement on the GTC4 Lusso) featuring evolutions of the previous version's powertrain. The big jump came when they introduced turbocharging in the California T and 488GTB. But still, a company with nearly 90 years of constant history should not be struggling to do this.
Without doubt, Lamborghini benefit from being within the VAG stable, as do Porsche. And Ferrari are a bigger company, and for many years had Fiat to share ( admittedly very few ) development costs. McLaren have had to go it alone which is doubtless harder but their products can suffer in comparison with the competition when it comes to variety as a result - they simply cannot afford to develop the variety and so we see so many models with (too) many similarities.

They've done well with what they have but they do not exist in isolation and, with the competition having economy of scale advantages, you wonder how long they can exploit their little niche before the consumer tires of the similiar offerings.

Why would one consider this McLaren over the current Bentley?

If you want something that is a bit more sporty and exciting to drive?

I’ve read some dull, plodding, leaden prose in my time here, but that has to be up the very worst. What a poor article.

nonetheless this is a really nice option when the 911 turbo or R8V10 is just not special enough.
Not sure about that. The first one that springs to mind is the Maserati Bora. Then again that had decent luggage space.

I have to confess on finding that first paragraph very hard to read and wondered if Nic Prosser had written it.

Perhaps it was a clever way of showing an analogy to the GT by simply smearing words across the page in a parody? Bring back 720S Dan. smile
It's Nic Cackett who writes the awful articles and yes, from that dreadfully overwrought first paragraph, I thought this piece was one of his. I'm also dubious as to whether or not PH have actually driven the car in question as the article is so brief and sounds like a regurgitated press pack.

The car itself looks magnificent and by the sounds of things, drives very well too. I think it looks like a magnificent compromise between GT comfort and mid-engined exotica. It may be slightly anodyne and characterless (so far, so McLaren) but I'm sure it will do the business to a high standard.

I am at least as confused as the car... I thought I was having a stroke half-way through that sentence.
HAHA!! Exactly what I thought, how many times did you re-read it and still realise it made absolutely no sense at all. I tried 3 times and gave up, then dialled 999

Nope.

Looks like a ford cougar based replica of a 570.

And then there’s the reputation of blue sports car owners (not Porsches) to contend with!

I quite like the looks.
Can’t get over the boot though, 10 litres less capacity than my estate yet can’t even take one decent sized case. A good example of another manufacturer using numbers to sell a car that really don’t tell the full story.

As nice as this is, I'd much rather wait for the 992 Turbo S.

Succinctly put. I thought the 570GT was a lovely thing but something about this doesn’t look right to me, McLaren normally has a kind of voluptuous yet aerodynamic style, this is a lot more... generic. Can’t put my finger on what exactly makes me think so!

That maybe the point though, perhaps they are going for the customer who wants something a little less stark.

I don't get it.
Looks just like every other model (P1 and 720 excluded), yet is a bit worse.

The quality of writing on the PH articles is embarrassing. Poor by any standard, but remarkably so against the competition in the world of car journalism.
