I know some Tesla drivers. They also wear Apple watches, often work from home, and say how good their cars are. They've all floored them to see how amazing the acceleration is. They haven't done so multiple times in a row. They haven't brought it on track, because... well... the thought has never entered their heads. None of them are car people, they're tech heads that like the newest & shiniest. Their iPhone costs £50/month, their Tesla again is a monthly cost, rarely bought outright. It's just something different, and once the mainstream manufacturers make half-decent affordable electric cars available, Tesla will feel the pinch.
Erm, could you possibly be generalising from the particular? I'm a Tesla owner-driver, I don't wear an Apple watch, I'm certainly not a tech head but I am very much a car (and motorcycle) person having owned 100+ cars and raced and rallied quite a number of them. I haven't tracked the Tesla because I have other and better ways of getting on a circuit. I paid outright for my iPhone and my Tesla. I bought the latter as I was curious to see how good EVs are and they are pretty good - ask Monkey Harris if you don't believe me. Tesla have a five+ year lead on the likes of Porsche and Audi - check the stats and the infrastructure advantages. I might buy a Taycan next, or another Tesla, or something else altogether, but whatever, it will have to stack up logically and be fast, quiet and comfortable. Cheap parking in Westminster and no Congestion or ULEZ charges for EVs also appeal.

Since getting an i8, I have to agree - so much this (although the fun and games stop for me in 2021 and you in 2025!).

Agreed, it’s the prototype model in disguise IMO.

Tesla are the underdog, the new guard. To start ‘bending’ the rules for plaudits would be an utterly daft move because everyone would pounce immediately to cry foul play. And it’s not been how they’ve operated so far, so why start now.

And think what you like about Musk, he’s probably stoned and laughing his tits off whilst on the phone to TacoBell.

This. It's a tricked out pony. The interior seats have been removed too
The ring cars are 7 seater interior cars.

all the buthurt from the Porsche/ice fans lol

The taycan was a prototype turbo model, even the brakes on it were an upgrade option.

I'm sure they'll go back perhaps with the turbo S, competition is good.

That riveted on Gurney flap is really classy!

Clearly not a car you can actually buy.

I agree that competition is good. I'll def have an EV in the garage soon just not yet. end of next year should provide far more choice.

This is getting a bit silly. Headline: 'Tricked and modded [insert make and model here] using cut slicks sets 'Ring record for [insert vehicle-type here]' sleep

There's a 'Ring-based trackday firm that runs Mk7 GTIs with a remap, widened arches, wider wheels and ultra-grippy tyres, upgraded brakes, lowered coil-overs and a roll cage - what's the difference between this type of spec and the dubious machines that the manufacturers use for their records? redcard

I assume the reason its fully blacked out including windscreen so you can see it has no interior and extra motors and so on ?

I hope Telsa release the spec of the car. So we know how close to being a production car it is.
My thoughts exactly. It’s practically buried the tyres I. The arches, and every window is tinted to hide that it probably has no interior. Christ only knows what spec it’s running.

speed aside, it looks beautiful in that colour with the lowering and wheels
hehe I have a Model S in that exact colour, wouldn't mind those wheels, anyone got a model for them?

As for the Ring Time, I don't think Tesla should have been bothered, as someone else pointed out, Porsche was never about getting the best bang for buck, but people that want one will buy one. Tesla has different appeals, good SuC network, range, practicality, top tech features. I'd just have taken the lesser interior and less track focus and leave it at that.
On the other hand, if Tesla can deliver this vehicle with a 50k premium, it will still undercut the Turbo S by a considerable margin.

Vertini Dynasty in Machined Silver are very close to the Alloys in the photo.

It is interesting but ultimately bks isnt it ? put your average punter in even the cheapest (all relative...)Model S and give it full throttle, and pants will be pooped, same for the Taycan, they are all so many degrees of overkill in terms of acceleration anyway. Now the "Plaid" (which I believe is colonial for Tartan) will have 900 bhp or therabouts
Plaid comes from Maximum Plaid which was the fastest speed in Spaceballs. Ludicrous mode was the 2nd fastest.
Yeah, I watched the clip the other day, I think they have run out of Spaceballs references now, not sure where they go from Plaid !

To be fair it wasn't an official record run as far as we know, just a photographer timing a development car, so complaining that it's cheating, it's not a production car is absurd. For all we know the fully developed production car will be faster...

I also expect Porsche / VW Group have bought a few Tesla's and ripped them apart to see what's inside them and learn where they can (I'm sure without infringing IP!)
...
I used to work for a major US car company in competitor vehicle evaluation. All the oem's reverse engineer each others cars. Usually we'd buy a part one of our engineering departments was interested in from a dealer but if it was something prohibitively expensive like a whole engine we'd just call round the rental companies at Detroit airport and tear a rental apart! hehe

But Porsche make money from production cars and have a rich history. Tesla, well, fill in the blanks.

It’s a typical Musk stunt.
