I bought a used one about a year and half ago as a second runaround, I only paid £16500 it and it wasn't yet 2 years old. It's a vastly underrated hot hatch. It's light, quick, economical, well equipt and the interior is surprisingly well put together.
The downside is the infotainment is dreadful, it's actually bordering on dangerous when you have to mess about with certain menus while driving, so I tend to leave it alone. And the Alcon brake pads for the front cost me nearly £500. But apart from that I'd definitely recommend one and at these used prices it's a bargain. In fact I was going to change it but I'm so pleased with it I'm going to keep it another 12 / 18 months.
What sort of life did you get out of the pads? One of the big sticking points for me on these is this front brake set up as i know the discs are a lot of money as well! So much so i'd be more tempted to go for the 250 version to run as they will be a lot more cost effective. The downside is the infotainment is dreadful, it's actually bordering on dangerous when you have to mess about with certain menus while driving, so I tend to leave it alone. Great looking car, I've always thought the styling was on-point. Didn't realise the GTi was packing 270hp though......pretty impressive.
The interior seems to be a bit Marmite, but I like the concept; it's quite minimal, which compared to some of the 'button explosions' there are around isn't a bad thing IMO.

I might be stuck in the 90's here but how is 270bhp from a 1.6 in slightest bit reliable? Do these things come with big bills?
I'm almost beginning to comprehend 300bhp from the Golf R's 2.0 but 168bhp/litre
Aren't the Merc A-classes putting out more than that per litre in the hot hatch class? Ford managed a similar output back in the 80s with the YB and also passed the normal Ford road car reliability tests so I'd guess it's just progress to do it with 400cc lessI'm almost beginning to comprehend 300bhp from the Golf R's 2.0 but 168bhp/litre

The interior is a nice place to sit if I'm being honest but that is just my personal opinion. Infotainment is dreadful though. The interior seems to be a bit Marmite, but I like the concept; it's quite minimal, which compared to some of the 'button explosions' there are around isn't a bad thing IMO.

When similar money gets you into 2015 Golf GTi (or a 2014 Golf R!), I can imagine this is only going to appeal to people who want something 'different'.

...a comparable Golf GTI is more expensive (with 50 less horsepower)...
A quick look on Autotrader dispels the "more expensive" bit quickly. And £500 on a remap (<4% of the car's value) would make the power difference negligible.
I'm sure you could also remap the Peugeot too. But you'd still be in a Peugeot 308.

I think it's main problem is a lack of image and too subtle styling. Power is good but its also only a 1.6
And the fact that the interior design and ergonomics feel like they are actively fighting against you on every journey.People here are too quick to cite "image" as the main reason why people buy VAG cars over French cars. However, when one feels like the interior was designed by an intern and the other is exceptional, it's not really "image".

I remember thinking 130bhp was good from a 1.6 in the Escort RS Turbo! 270bhp does seem a massive amount in comparison for sure. I remember looking at these when I had my E90 330i, and they made me think why am I bothering running an engine that is miles more thirsty for less performance. This is down sizing at its very best for me.
I have had one from new - best car I have ever had for all round ability. Fast - yes although with a bit of turbo lag. Comfortable - have those criticising actually sat in the GTi? Its great. No problems with the steering wheel, in fact the small wheel set low makes a lot of sense. Handling - amazing for a saloon with trailing rear axle - it just grips and goes, the rear follows like a puppy dog. Economy - 42mpg longterm on super unleaded. All the toys came as standard but I added the Denon and this is the best in-car sound system I have heard. And it is just so solid - it beats the Germans at their own game. Had got fed up with VW, their slipped timing chains, broken springs and a forest of warning lights after 6 years. Greatly under-rated.
I seriously looked at one of these as I like the understated nature of them and a few of MSV circuits used them as ARDS / training cars.
I just could not forgive that horrible i-Cockpit though. Steering wheel far to small and you end up compromising either comfort of dial view, the lack of buttons is a massive no from me especially with such a laggy system and the dial is on the wrong side for RHD cars! Guessing it works OK for LHD but it's a real pain.
Such a shame as I really enjoyed the rest of it.

golfs are so overpriced these days, this is good value
Presumably you missed the point where I said you could buy a Golf GTi (a better car by every measure other than horsepower) for the same money on Autotrader, and a year older Golf R for the same money again? Its horses for courses but OMG I get fed up with the French car bashing on here! Not everyone wants a soulless VAG product....

I'm quite tall so the i-Cockpit works well for me, you get used to a few of it's foibles like the dials and the steering wheel is no problem at all now I'm used to it - in fact I also drive a TTRS and the R8 steering wheel in that is too big, I prefer the size of my 308 wheel. But yes Infotainment is a let down. I could see why it puts people off. Can't fault rest of car thoughI just could not forgive that horrible i-Cockpit though. A friend has one of these. Fantastic looking and rare, I quite like the interior apart from the touchscreen thing which is hateful. Great to drive too, feels almost too quick for it's own good, but a lot of fun and nice noise too.
Gear change is the only real let down: bit of long throw and feels a little imprecise.

I don't find it imprecise at all, maybe some are different to others. It has got a bit of a long throw, but again, once you live with one for a bit you become used to it. The gearbox is fine, I agree they look great in the flesh. I've only seen another one on the road and I've had mine a year and a half, I like the exclusivity.Gear change is the only real let down: bit of long throw and feels a little imprecise.
