RE: Maybach 62 | The Brave Pill
Discussion
Dunno where to start, did laugh them losing a third of a mill on every one sold though.
You compare to (BMW) rolls, but (whatever you think of them) rolls was already an iconic brand that was modernised while still retaining its own identity, even if it did utilise much of a premium brands parts & r&d. Maybach, zero real brand awareness hence cache, and looked like a fairly bland merc of the era.
Filthy rich people tend to be either pretty smart with money or want to shout about it, maybach doesn't serve either.

Wait a couple of years until the electrics start failing, the engine needs a fettle and rust is starting to show. The ultimate shed.
It is already 15 years old. What do you suppose is likely to happen within the next couple of years that wouldn't have already had the potential to rear its ugly head already?Welshbeef said:
Then Jeremy Clarkson buys it in 15 years time and oh its the next Gosser I’ll show off mine get the market moving on it make a killing
Doubt it. The only outstanding thing about it is the depreciation and running costs. It’ll be down there with the rusty and unloved 70s Rollers.
Were I to consider taking the plunge on this, i think I'd want it to see the inside of a Maybach-authorised dealer workshop before going anywhere near it.
I could see this doing the airport run for an upmarket cab company, but it would cost a lot more than their normal E220d Mercs to run.

The lwb S class a few years old costing £40k will be hugely superior will it not?I could see this doing the airport run for an upmarket cab company, but it would cost a lot more than their normal E220d Mercs to run.
Did they really lose $300k on each car? Or was that R&D amortisation?

Now that is value for money!!!!The above or the Maybach..... no choice really this linked one is epic the maybach is pants
Struggling to see the target market.
Not sure many private punters would want to drive it.
And if it’s being put to work (as was the design brief) for lower tier hotels / restaurants/ airport transfers, it’ll have horrendous running costs vs the standard S320cdi that is expected at that level.
Bit of a baffling one really.

This car was actually based on the W140 S Class Chassis not the W220. As the W140 was of course a larger car more suited to the size and weight of the Maybach. The interior architecture also came from the W140 .
This is a well known fact. Poor/lazy research by the PH journo. It’s based on the W140 platform, with the more modern engines, electronics, and Airmatic suspension from the W220 grafted in.Nerdherder said:
~I think a 62 at this price is a very fun proposition. Shame I have 3 kids really.
How long before the eldest can get his/her licence? The other 2 could squeeze onto the passenger seat surely, just like in the good old days. Or the boot.Maybach used to have a discreet ad in the Sunday Times motoring section back in the day. In fairly small print at the bottom just four words made quite a statement:
"Armoured specification to order"
I would have loved to have been in a position to take them up on that
